I'd have to disagree with that based on that picture alone. The oil I get is dark like the right and slightly cloudy from fats when it comes to me. After I cold filter it I monitor it very carefully when I pour it back into a storage container. If its a nice, golden color while its being poured (at the coldest temps possible) then it passes. If its still cloudy then I wait for even colder temps and filter again. It can look dark sitting in a can but should be a nice golden color when it makes it to your tank. I do agree that the stuff on the left would be my oil of choice but it doesn't necessarily mean the oil on the right is bad. More analysis would be necessary.

my oil from the italtian cafe looks dark like that, I use salt to dewater then filter it with a 10 micron prefilter and 1 micron final filter and it just looks a little lighter but has been working fine for my 83SD

That's another thing. When I can't syphon it out of the can I stop pouring when the crap starts coming out. I let mine settle for about a week and filter down to five microns.

Oh. Lol. Maybe its just my computer then. It all looks like one uniform color. That's how mine looks when I pour it into cubies. After a couple of days the icky stuff settles out and looks like a pasty grey color, lighter than the good stuff but just barely. After a while you really get a good eye for spotting good oil. Makes all my friends think I'm weird the way I study the stuff and talk about it, especially when I smell it. lol.

i learned this from the guys at the greasecar forum. you pour salt ontop of your wvo and warm it to 90f to 100f and let it settle the salt will drag down the water to the bottom leaving you with water-free wvo. if you dont beleive it then boil it for 8 hours and the water should seperate to the bottom and if there is no water then you know the salt method worked! after that is done just run it through your filters to keep any extra salt that is still in the wvo out. but run it more than once just to make sure the salt is all out of the wvo. and there you go!!

oh if you want to make a mini test take a cup of wvo and pour some salt ontop of the wvo and put it in the microwave for 30seconds and watch it work its magic. after its done pour out the wvo and take a look at the salt it will be thick with water.

The dark oil was used to fry squid? I think the coloration
is due to SQUID INK more than anything. Filter out the gunk
and then use it - squid ink is harmless and it only takes a little
bit to really darken some oil (squids use their ink to hide from
predators - a little goes a long way in making an ink cloud under
the sea).

Salt

You are trying to make the salt disolve into the water therefore increasing its density. When you have salt water which weights more than fresh water, it settles out of the oil easier and faster due the increased density difference between the two fluids.
