AVG.RPM's
If I recall correctly RPM @ idle is 650 +/- 100 . But what about say going 65-70 mph? my 83 300D is spinning at about 3k. Is this normal at this speed. It drives fine but just SEEMS like the tach reading should be less. Maybe around 2000 instead.
As far as I know the rear end is stock, does any one know the gear ratio's? How much power would I lose and how much would the RPM drop with a smaller rear end? I am just curious, no biggie. as always. thanks. zachariah |

IIRC my 83 is about 3000 rpm at 68 to 70 mph depending if I'm going uphill or down. Transmission is probably slipping a little I don't know. Do a search on Easter Egg and you will find some good info.

Your rpm's are normal. The 82-84 300D turbo has a 3.07 final ratio. The 85 turbo was a higher ratio (better mileage) and the non-turbo 300D had lower ratios. If you search, you will find info on swapping ratios.

I was doing 80-90mph to and from ann arbor saturday, I don't really want to know what mileage I got running at 3.5-4k rpm But since I found a source of diesel around here for a DOLLAR EIGHTY NINE, yes, 1.89, a gallon. I am not too worried about it!

They're actually geared perfectly to what the speed limit was at the time when these cars were new.

I know... ever try a 300SD or 300Dt at about 58 mph, it feels absolutely, resolutely quiet.
What's really funny is that these cars can take being driven faster at 200K miles than they were when new... who ever thought we'd see 75 MPH speed limits again? |

This is good to know. I thought my speedo was off on the high end of the scale, but it sounds right on the money according to you guys cars. Sometimes it's hard to judge speeds when 90% of people drive at minimun 5 mph over the limit.

My 300D is very happy at 85 for extended amounts of time, however it sounds a little buzzy if I keep it much faster than that for any amount of time. I've thought about changing the final ratio, but I would just get myself in trouble.

Yeah I know but 58 drives me nuts. The SDL has a sweet spot at about 100 where she just glides. I think about 4k rpm or so. The W126 chassis were built for very high speeds on the Autobahn. They are certianly capable of 140 in comfort with the right driveline. Also the W126 has a CD of 0.36, extremly low fo its day.
