I'm surprised it did as well as it did, but that crash would be a little tough on the driver's feet.

As impressive as the condition of the cabin post-crash, I'd have to think the driver would have some major internal disruptions -- and no legs -- anyway. Then again, head on into a wall at 70 mph, you'd be dead in most vehicles. I love these little cars ... I tend towards bigger, tougher vehicles and usually shy away from sporty little things, but man, these little guys are cool. Is there a way to get one in Europe and import it? Wouldn't that be nifty to have around town?

On a side note ... and this is really going to sound prudish ... if someone posts a link to a website with mild pornography on the borders, could you include a "Warning"? I opened that at work, and if someone had been walking by, it could have been really awkward ...

There's a site I hang out on and if there's a link to some questionable content, the poster puts a "35%" warning in the title. The premise being 35% of people would be offended.

Of course you also get "Hey, check this out...35%!!!

I would like to think that a full size w126 body would have moved that concrete a bit more than that smart did.

I am impressed though...I realize no legs there but the frame held up and crumpled all that it could before it crushed the leg area.

Wonder how they do in side impact? Probably just scoots the car right off the road cause its so light

Biggest safety feature....sliding when getting rammed into

Transpot Canada, tested the Smart car for crash worthiness. It proved to be one of the safest cars on the road, EVER.

Go Figure.

The smart.com website lists the "pure" car at $16,000 ... is that USD? That seems really cheap for a Mercedes-Benz ... am I missing something?

Mercedes has no desire to sell to the unwashed masses....they only want to cater to the wealthy.

Being from Canada and knowing a few folks who have some Smarts I can say:

a) 16K Cdn is the base price, 25K is more what you pay once you've add all the options you'd *really* want. Still it could be a 16K car if I don't compare to everything that came with my 300TD.

b) Don't even think of importing to the USA, the nasty folks in the USA government will impound/fine and send you to somewhere not nice depend on where you were born. Phone Mercedes Benz USA or write a letter and ask them when it will come to the USA.

c) Sold 3000 in canada in one year which was 2000 more that wildest estimate and 2400 more than first guess by MB canada. Which made it the top new small car sold in Canada by numbers.

d) another link, without the p0rn

No, the problem is MB knows that Americans are still addicted to their oversized vehicles and they would feel too insecure in a Smart Car. But if you really want one, it might be a good start to write to MBUSA about it, and the more people do it, the more likely something will happen.

BTW, does anyone know what kind of fuel economy these cars get?

3 out of 4 vehicles on the road around here are big SUV's driven by people paying more attention to thier cell phone calls than they are to traffic around them.....No thanks....
