IR shots of the 617 engine

These are a couple of pics I took using our FLIR http://www.flirthermography.com/ infrared camera from work. Pretty interesting is the fact that the temp gauge on the dash was reading around 85 dC and the thermostat was barely open based on what I can tell from the pic. The white part of the pics is the hottest part. The temperature scale is the vertical bar along the right side of the pictures and the cross hair temp is shown at the top of the vertical bar. These shots were taken about 5 minutes after an interstate run with the car idling.

The first shot shows the thermostat housing and the second shows a pic of the head/block on the injection pump side of the engine.

Jim, how does the camera supposedly measure temperature with surfaces of different emissivity? Don't you have to give it some sort of a reference?

Couple more shots. These are the oil cooler and the turbo area. Note the temp of the oil cooler. Who said that the oil cooler thermostat never opens?

Pete - I don't have a clue how this camera works. Maybe you can read about it on the site that I posted about the camera. Keep in mind that this camera with software runs in the neighborhood of $25k.

what happens if you enter different values for "e" - like 0.8 for cast iron and 0.1 for aluminum? I'm just guessing really, but it seems like inorder for the camera to try to estimate temperature via receiving a signal of energy flux it would need to know the emissivity of the surface, which I think is that e=0.97 in the pictures. Reminds me of a joke.-2 guys in a dept store, 1 picks up a thermos "wow, these things are just SO amazing!" other guy says "what's so amazing about a thermos? It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold?" 1st guy says "yeah, but how does it KNOW?"

What about a picture that would show the upper and the lower oil cooler hoses in the same picture? That way we could see what the temp difference is of the oil going in vs. the oil leaving the cooler. I'm curious to see if the cooler lowers temps much.

Thanks
David

Very cool pics!

David you don't need an IR camra for that your hand will do. The line in will burn your hand pretty fast the return line you could hold your hand on forever.

whoa, thats cool, the oil cooler ones, makes me wonder why [almost] no american cars have oil coolers, it'd increase capacaty for engine life wouldn't it, b'cause it'd be cooler inside the engine, so there wouldn't be as much wear right??

I'd like to have someone take one of my house from every side......see where my heat losses are the worst....but I'd have to pay them....I'm too cheap to do that.

The camera is owned by the company I work for and we use it as a part of our predictive maintenance program to find problems in electrical breakers and switching equipment and to determine if we have bearing/load issues on various types of equipment. I'll bring it home again next week and try to get some more shots including the inlet/outlet temperature of the oil cooler.

It has been used by some folks to determine heat loss of their homes.

I think everyone has it wrong, its not cool its hot. PICKY PICKY PICKY
What kind of work do you do? I've used thermography to check elec. panels, motor bearings, fan bearings and pump bearings at work.

They guy I work for was one of these infrared thermal imagers for Intel.

He was one of the few people, if not the only one that could walk into a operating fab with a camera.

Look for the glowing hot part, wire, connection, etc.

You'll find your problem
