Idea for EGR blockoff plate
I have a project vehicle 1984 300TD. I purchased it wrecked and it has some overdue maintenance and some of the nitpicky problems that come with an older vehicle. My current problem is that I'm up against the old addage of: "To do one thing, you have to do something else first."
For instance, I want a boost gauge and pyrometer. To install the pyrometer I need to remove the turbo (and open a currently not leaking exhaust) and remove the air cleaner housing (new rubber mounts). Then while I am in there I really should de-carbon the intake and replace the turbo drain seals. Another example is my roof rack/sunroof/paint situation. The car needs to be painted. It has a rusty roof rack (I have a spare from a parts car that is in good condition), the sunroof needs to be fixed (it is way out of adjustment, and is currently closed. Any movement causes leaks). I really need to do all three of those things. To remove the headliner though I have to remove the side (B) pillar covers. When I do that I want to replace the seatbelts with some non-cracked ones from the donor. So that's a long weekend, and more if I decide to have it painted while the roof rack is off. Down to the idea though: what about an EGR blockoff plate that has a nut welded into the center to hold the pyrometer probe. I wouldn't have to remove the turbocharger. I wouldn't even have to remove the air cleaner. It would make my list of "must do's" shorter, at least for the time being. -Tad

I have a number of similar projects intertwined, such as replacing a dash and getting into the A/C vacuum pods under it and may as well replace the expansion valve and do a flush as it is converted from R134 back to R12 and installing a new radio in the console while I am there, sheesh the list can get long, can't it?
as for the EGT idea, that is something I plan to do on one of my '87 300Dt's when I get an intercooler for it. The 603 engine already has a nut in the front of the exhaust manifold, I planned to drill a hole in the center and stick the thermocouple wire thru it with a dab of high temp RTV to seal it, if I had the right compression nut that would fit I'd probably use that but the silicone rubber will seal pretty effectively I believe. I'll find out after I get to that project! I think the best place for the probe is close to an exhaust port rather than downstream at the collector for example.

The EGR port won't give you an accurate reading. If you look closely at the manifold it is actaully in its own port all the way to the center of the exhaust manifold.
You need to put it at the collector in the manifold if you want accurate, quick, readings. There is a picture online of where I put mine. It seems to be a good spot. Leave the turbo on...just unbolt both manifolds...it is MUCH easier. Take the whole thing off as a unit and clean, etc. Put it back on All you need is a new exhaust manifold gasket (it does both intake and exhaust). Fighting with all the brackets/hold-downs on the turbo is a *****. |
