224 gear in a 350sdl?

so i drove from lafayette to kalamazoo last night. on the istate in mich the speed limit is 70 so i was going 80 mostly. 3300rpm. this 350 engine has so much torque i kept thinking of putting a 224 rear in it. iit would be about a 20% overdrive equivalant, i think. so that might push mileage over 30. i wouldnt mine giving up a little low end grunt.
so, anybody done this? if i do it would i just have to change the speedo out like in the older 123 cars? will the diff bolt in?
see, also the motor may go 20% further too before bending the rod.
on the other hand if i do this and then bend the rod and put in the 3.0 liter block, it may be too doggy.
just thinking my usual random thoughts when i dont have to apply my mind to mundane matters of making money.

I think it would be a fine idea for that engine, however, are you not considering a 2.47 axle rather than a 2.24??

The 2.47 would be a considerably change from the current 2.88.

yeah

i am thinking of the 224. the 247 worked so well for the diesel geeks in their 300td i figure i could go one better with the torquey 350.

walgamuth, news flash, IN has a speed limit of 70mph too... It happened over the summer if you recall though in MI they seem to be more leanient (sp?) with their posted limits. Are you in Lafayette or West Lafayette? We're not far when I'm at school and if I can ever convince my parents to let me take my car down I'd like to see your cars if I could.

Thanks
David

Thumbs up

I think finding the 2.24:1 will be the hard part. 2.47:1s are far easier to locate. I know both are available in a limited slip!

My SDL was out last night (received five tickets from the local police, LONG story I was too excited to drive it I didn't have anything with me and a burned out light) and it runs great on the freeway. I found a nice clear patch of freeway and it pulled easily to 110mph but slower to 117mph. I had to slow down as a car pulled out in front of me.

This 603 motor is really something else on the freeway. My engine temps never got past ~75°C either.

Forum member Frankenbenz has a 2.24 in a '85 Sd . http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=135626
According to the factory chassis manual the 2.24 ratio is stock on '84+'85
500Sel + 500Sec. My search did not look into later models. As I understand it, '84 did not have ABS but the '85+up did have ABS. It is not possible (or at least not practical) to put a rear end from a car with ABS into one that does not have ABS and vice-versa. I'll be looking for a 2.24 from an '84 in the spring. The speedo will be off since it is a 123, can't swap a speedo from a 126 into a 123. On a 126 just swap the rear end and speedo-it should be accurate. I'll live with slow off the line and transposed speedo for better mpg/engine wear, considering that my driving is mostly highway. It can't be any slower than the '71 VW bus I drove for a few years.

Please elaborate on the ABS issue.

I have a 1981 300SD 126 and a parts 1986 420SEL 126.

The 420 has ABS and a 2.47. I was going to put this diff in the SD, is it a clearance problem? Would the fact that I also have the complete rearend (halfshafts/suspension/uprights) available from the 420 change this situation? I can't see how you couldn't install basically the whole rear suspension from the 420 to alleviate the compatibility issue. Where are the ABS reluctors on this setup?
