Non-silicon gasket sealer for water pump....Hylomar?

1982 300D

Okay, so I'm replacing my water pump, and I've read that it's not a good idea to use silicon as it can harm the engine.

What's a good non-silicon gasket sealer? I picked up some Permatex "Hylomar HPF" gasket dressing and flange sealant. I can't tell if it has silicon or not. Is this acceptable, or does anyone recommend something else?

Thanks,

Pete.

None necessary

I replaced mine about 10k ago, PO had used some crap that made it impossible to get off.

I put the new pump on using the paper gasket and nothing else. No leaks.

I used Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket. I'm a big fan of it, but it may make future removal difficult. Since I put a brand new OEM water pump on, I'm guessing there will be a complete engine rebuild before the next water pump replacement so I'm not too worried about it.

I used Hylomar on both the water pump and vacuum pump on my 92 300D (OM602). Worked great, easy to use.

I've been using the Permatex Hi-Tack. Just a very little bit to ensure a perfect seal. It seems to be a shellac based sealant. I've never had a problem with it.

I can't get the gasket for my thermostat from the parts store, should I go get it from the MB dealer or can I get away with using some type of form-a-gasket?

Gasket on your thermostat? Do you mean the actual rubber ring around the thermostat itself? If you're talking about where the thermostat housing splits for the thermostat, I don't think there is a gasket there, the rubber on the thermostate itself seals it. If you're leaking there, the ancient rubber on your thermostat has gone south. As far as where the rest of the whole housing goes against the engine, I'd use my permatex aviation stuff.

That's the one! Shoot. Wish I had remembered that when I went up to PepBoys this morning. Then again, they probably don't sell it.

Pete.

P.S. The one I'm replacing looks like it has half a cup of blue RTV silicon sealant!

Pete , You are thinking about the hand wringers who put too much Gasket maker on their edges needing sealing...
What can happen when they don't follow instructions is that some of it squeezes out into the oil pan or valve area.... then gets sucked into the oil system and clogs a passage...
There is nothing wrong with using Silicone for the water system. And there would be nothing wrong with the oil pan gaskets and stuff if they followed my instructions.... what is needed is time for a thin coat to cure on the gasket.. then a thin layer is placed on the surfaces to be sealed... there just is not enough to squeeze out doing it that way... and it is GREAT SEALER... At one time I used Aviation Gasket Cement for many things...but what a mess to clean off the next time it needs to be addressed.... but most of the time a gasket coated the way I describe can be reused....

I meant the housing (I realize now my post was lacking detail). I haven't actually taken the housing off yet, I just assumed there would be a gasket at the base of the housing. Well I guess I know why the parts store didn't carry a gasket for it.

You are correct. The housing does require a gasket where it is secured to the head. No surprise that the parts store was clueless.

What about clean-up later? Is it hard to remove and clean surfaces?
