DIY Fast Glow System Question
Hey All-
Not sure about the condition of the glow plugs in the 190d- but if the rest of the car is any indication of the service provided by prev-owner they need to be swapped. I'll be picking up 4 Bosch 8006 glow plugs for it- and I read somewhere that these were the same plugs used in the "Fast Glo/Afterglo" system. Would there be much advantage to swapping out the glow plug relay at the same time- and if so, is there a part number for the relay in the "fast glo" system I should be looking for? Thanks in Advance- John Last edited by satyr; 11-25-2005 at 04:37 PM. |

Unlike most original relays (depending on model year), the new relay will provide post-glowing (i.e. the plugs will be active for a short period after the engine starts). This feature makes the engine run much more smoothly after a cold start.
With the original relay, the engine will start fine, then after about 5 seconds, the plugs cool and it runs a little rough and smokes a tiny bit. Then, it smooths out after about 20 seconds once the engine starts to heat up. With the new relay, you skip the brief rough-running and smoking phase; it runs smoothly all the time. It makes a big difference if you live in a colder climate. I put the new relay in my 190d, and left the old glow plugs alone. The new relay makes a big difference.
