alternator alternative (123)?
Hi. I'm looking for more output from my alternator to run an extra heater on my veggiemobile ('84 300TD). I've talked to local shops who say that it can't be boosted. So is there an alternative alternator that works in this application and if so what modifications (brackets?) need done to make it work? I remember hearing about a GM replacement but didn't get the make/model/year...
Also, where is the best place to wire in electrical accessories? If it's the fuse box how does one access it? thanks!! |

The Bosch AL129X 115amp alternator will fit on the OM617 engine. You'll have to use your current pulley, and you may have to remove the case of the alternator, rotate it 90 degrees, and reclose it, in order for it to fit best. You'll also need beefier wiring to and from the alternator.
They were found on early 90's SAABs (as an option), and can be bought new or remanufactured online as well. Search for "AL129x" to get a LOT of information about it, and reports from people who've done it. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=BOS&mfrpartnumber=AL129X peace, sam

I'm using the 129x in my car with a very current hungry stereo and I am more than happy with its output...And not too bad to install either....

W126 models came with a 65 amp alt that swaps right in. Later Saabs that may have the 115 amp alt came with a 85 amp unit standard- the 115 amp was an option. Some volvo's also have the 85 amp units. I've pulled quite a few of the 115 amp units for members and they've worked out well for them.

Anyone contemplating a swap needs to be concerned with the pulley, its possible you will need to swap that too, and the connectors (wiring harness). Most high current alternators use a bolt for the output and for the field connection, the stock alternators used a plug that fits onto the alternator, obviously you need to connect differently and having some electrical knowledge will be helpful. Here's a short thread on the 126 subject: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=50173

Austin,
I'm running the vegtherm and the vormax right now but I really don't think the oil is getting hot enough. It's a single tank system (Neoteric) and I'd like to add some heat. I've seen a heater that looks light foil that wraps around the tubes to the injectors. Maybe the electrical option to the vormax. I'm open to suggestions, though. Where is a good place to wire in these accessories? The fuse box perhaps? |
