How easily should my turbo spin?

I had my air cleaner assy off of my '84 SD to get at the banjo bolt this afternoon. I stuck my finger into the turbine inlet to check for any excessive play, etc (198k mi) and the turbo didn't seem to spin very freely. It turned easily enough, but I guess I though that I could give it a spin and it would freewheel or something...?

How should it feel?

I just did this to our 83 yesterday, and it felt just as you describe yours to. I believe this to be perfectly normal. Freewheeling would be too loose I would think....

they float on a film of oil

so if the oil is cold it wont spin that easily.

I had a rebuilt turbo that did spin freely. Mine on the 99 E300 also does.

It should spin like the eagle soars through the crisp mountain air.
