I did

I bought a truck listed on craigslist . Got a good deal and I drive it amost everyday. It's like the classified ads , you should do your homework when buying a car, meaning history reports, reading about the type of vehicle and what to watch out for and asking the owner lots of questions. For every happy buyer or seller there is probably an unhappy buyer or seller after all its a used car. I think you can find better deals on craigslist because it is more local, but the great deals only last a couple of hours.
Ebay is part owner of craigslist and I say they are pretty even.

He is Craig @craiglist.org
I bought two cars on Craigslist. Both are '87 300D turbos. Local cars. One $2500 and one $400 (yeah! now I know about how the cheapest cars are the most expensive cars)
Craigslist is the greatest thing that has happened in a long time!
No one needs newspaper car ads anymore!

Craig's list is awesome, I check it about two dozen times a day. However it is riddled with scammers so watch out for deals that are too good to be true.

eBay on the other hand is riddled with embellishers, well really I guess alot of them are blatant liars but at least on eBay you have some recourse if you get screwed.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

i bought my 83 sd from someone on craigslist. if your comparing ebay to craigslist its completley different just for the fact that you dont bid on the cars and the cars are in your area. you can actually go see the car yourself and test drive it and wat not. for me it worked out for the best the guy i bought my sd from was a diesel enthusiest. had a home made kit installed in the car similar to greasels and he worked at a bio-d factory. and i got the car in great running shape for $800!!!!!!!! love the car to death and is still running with minor problems that im to lazy to fix

I think Craigslist is great for local stuff.....It would take a huge leap of faith to buy something a long way off however.

Craig's list

I bought my 1999 E300 Turbodiesel from the San Francisco Bay Area Craig's List. There is a large Mercedes diesel population to be found there. The car in question was about seven miles away from where I live; the transaction unfolded well, even if the car needed more than the average amount of work.

Both of my 300d's have come off craigslist, as has my friend's 240d. I had good experiences both times. Sometimes great deals come up where people don't really know what they have. You have to act quick and be prepared for anything. Probably a lot more honest sellers, as there are fewer dealers so if the car comes from someone who cared, it is likely a better vehicle.

I grew up in the bay area too so I feel like I belong there!

So far I have had three good craigslist transactions. I found my 6.9 and my W115 240D on CL and I just sold my Miata with decent results on CL without any problems. I ended up wasting $55 on cars.com A lot of lowballers but it does generate more traffic and it's just a matter of time before you get a serious buyer.

There are a lot of liars out there who grossly exxagerate performance just like ebay and severely overprice their cars. A $1100 junker is one example, and or claiming 1 BILLION mile longevity on a NA 300D and ask $4200 with unknown mileage

Watch out for the people who claim to be individual owners but really are dealers. Google the phone number online to see if it is traceable beforehand.

Bring your flashlight and be critical and you'll find some good runners out there. They all need a lot more work but that's all part of the fun
