harsh downshift in 300SDL
My car has a clunk when downshifting into 3rd I believe. It may have been second but it is only that gear. Also, it only seems to do it when I am lightly accelerating, not with the throttle mashed pushing the kickdown button. Every other vacuum accessory works well on the car and I think most of the fittings are new or in great shape.
What gives? Thanks David

Mine does that also....(we've ridden in each others cars...).......I believe it has something to do with the vac modulator for the tranny. Mine runs fine otherwise and shifts firm and perfect, so I am not bothered by the downshift clunk, I've become quite used to it. Our 83 does not do it....oh well....it has a lot of new items in the vacuum system from the previous owner (the guy replaced a ton of stuff)

Mine used to clunk...
When I pulled my vacuum control valve on the IP, I set the spring too tight and it clunked and gave sharp shifts. When I adjusted it for more vac to the transmission (relieved some spring), it went away. So, I would recommend looking at your vacuum system to the transmission.

Does anyone know where or how this is adjusted on an SDL? Fixing this would get it shifting perfectly.
Thanks David

I am not certain about the 126 chassis bit on the 124's worn bushings on the rear control arms will make a pronounced clunk sound at shifts, esp 2 - 3 and 3 - 4.
The MB transmission is supposed to shift a bit hard, granted you can slew it by adjusting the vacuum modulator, that will increase wear on the clutches however. I've grown to just accept the harder shifts and replace all the rear control arms. The clunk then becomes a slight kick in the pants (or snap in the neck) as the tranny shifts. So before you try to smooth the shifts out a lot be sure there aren't some suspension parts that are at the root of the noise.

The trans upshifts fine, it's just when it downshifts to 2 or 3 (can't remember which one) it is rather harsh. Everything else about it is fine. It's like when you have the pedal 3/4 of the way down and the car downshifts but I think that if I floor it, it drop yet another gear. It only does in on the 3/4 throttle downshifts so I think it's 3rd gear that does it.
Thanks David

Fixed a downshift clunk in my 123 with a new driveshaft center bearing rubber mount. It would let the driveshaft smack the floor pans.

The clunk I caused and cured with the vacuum regulator was the downshift to 2 or maybe even 1st.
