Motor R&R - AC ? Quick answer?
AC issue - quick answer?
Do anyone know if I have to have the AC evacuated when we change out the motor? My ac works and it would be $78 a pound for new r12 + $80 labor (3lbs?) Can the a/c compresor just be unbolted and the motor put in place then rebolted without r&r the r12? Is there room to do this in the 79 300SD? I did a search on AC but could not find this info... I need to do this today if it has to be done... the evac.. |

Eugene,
You won't disturb the AC system by R&R the motor, but the engine is a different question. You might be able to remove the compressor from the engine with the hoses attached, thus not losing any freon. I did this on a 220D one time. If not, you can save the cost of the freon by having an AC shop pump your freon into a tank and reusing it. They pump it into a tank anyway but usually keep it and resell it. P E H |

The shop wants to charge me $89 for labor to refill and $78 per pound for the r-12. They will take my r-12 free though... Anyone have experence with this? Thanks! |

I bought R-12 on Ebay in Sept., this year, for $11.33 a pound delivered. 15 pound "pony" tank.
Yeah, that was a lucky deal; but..... $78 per pound is RIDICULOUS with an $89 labor charge to put it in. Get a new A/C shop that actually wants your business. (I assume you mean refrigerant; not "coolant")

Yes! The AC compressor can be unbolted from the engine and manifold hoses left connected if you are removing the engine. Dave M. (gsxr) did it - click the link below to see.
