Diesel Emissions in California
I read something recently, unfortunately, I don't remember where, that in 2007 California is going to expect Diesel automobiles to pass similiar emission tests as gas autos must pass now. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this and if so, what would that mean for older MBs if they are unable to meet the new standard?

That was in the AOL article that was posted here recently. Relax, it only concerns new diesel cars and has nothing to do with older models.

Thanks. I thought I was going to have to sell my 300SD in the next couple of years.

Rudolf Diesel u. Kalifornien
The posture of diesels here in California is laughable, really. Last month, I drove a wonderful A class Mercedes in Germany, an A180, for a week---from Vienna to Berlin and around the capital for several days. It was a diesel with a very small, but quite powerful motor. Never a chance of such a vehicle here in the Golden State, to be sure with the wrong headed Diktat which was always sending me nasty letters about my beloved 1979 240D. Pfui. I have yet to receive one for my E300, but surely it is only a matter of time.

Anyways I think thats funny, and would enjoy a scanned copy of one of thoose letters. CA's wierd... IMHO the trade in location isnt worth the trade in car standards. Registration, new tital, plates, and "inspection sticker"... And a few other things since the PO didnt register my truck, and I only got a bill of sale. That was only cost $150... plates/stickers are $100 anyways Thanks alot ~Nate

It's not able to be done to our vintage iron... it was built in a time where there were very few emission constraints on them (mechanical devices at best such as EGR as well as the cats on the later ones).
Think of late 60s trucks and cars, no emission stuff at all. You're not required to run it but you can if you wish. Heck, after 25 years a vehicle only needs a safety inspection here.

I'm the opposite. I love snow and I couldn't stand living in a place that doesn't get any. I agree that CA is weird. If CARB cares so much about old diesel emissions, then why don't they require annual smog tests like they do over here? I really have no problem taking them, except they are too expensive compared to a gas smog test. If they're going to test new diesel cars the same way they test new gasser cars, then it's only fair enough to require all new SUV's and pickup trucks to pass the same test as well. Afterall they all fall under the same category when it comes driver licenses and registration.

Yeah i am waiting for next years letter from CARB wanting me to sell my beloved helga for 400 dollars to californa for them to put my diesel out of commision to decrease emissions. I tear up the bullcrap and spit on it. Maybe if it was a resonable offer like say 4 grand i might consider it then get into another diesel.

Why do CARB vehicals get worse MPG, and die quicker than fed vehicals? That confuses the heck outta me Isnt the goal to go dur other way? And its not just cheese here... Its Cheese (better then yours ), brats, and beer... (dont try millwalkies finest)... with snow, its fun to watch the southies struggle, and the northies have a blast. "Sir, I'm only seeing what my vehical does in an emergency situation, so if i hit an icy spot in traffic I know what to do" Havent had time to use that one yet... only got my temps Which I have met all the requirements for... except the friggin age requirement... Am I going to be a better driver in <3 months? Thats all ~Nate

I wasn't planning on selling my pride and joy. And why carbs run crappier is because they put all kinds of extras on the motors to reduce emissions. CARB can go stick it where the sun don't shine.

i say .. thats stupid ban old cars.. well if it means all old cars then it must be all.. no classics at all.. leno will have to move out of state and so will alot of movie stars that have collectable cars. and people wont be able to commute .. the people that cant afford new cars like the mother with 3 children and her 1979 olds wagon.. well then california your just a bunch or damn liberals.. (governemt not the people.. well most of them but not the members here)

I hate california
California is a pile of crap. everythign is more expencive here. i'd like to get a new car except for the fact that i can't afford everythign else in my life, and then have to take on the extra burdon of paying for the car payments and the extra insurance, and the leagal crap. i liked it when my dad gave me my 300SD. i walked into DMV gave them the pink, they say thanks and the car was mine. no bull****. no smog, not nothing.. that way its supose to be!
