I have a 1982 240 d. She runs great but there is a considerable amount of play in the steering wheel. How can I tighen the steering to make it feel new again?

I would say the best thing to do would be to start at the tie rod ends. If you enter the diesel discussion forum, there is a link that says stickyIY links for w123 or somthing like that. If you click that, there is a link in the first section entitled "Renewing Steering feel". It seems quite extensive, and I think all the info you need should be there. Good Luck.

I fixed that problem in my 240Ds by adjusting the stearing box. Lossen the lock nut and turn adjusting screw counter clock wise a small amount at a time.

Unhappy uh oh....help.

I took the lock nut off of my steering box. Then when I attempted to turn the adjusting screw counter clockwise. I stripped it pretty good.It didnt even budge. I had a 6mm hex on the end of a few extensions.I still have about 2in. of play in the wheel. I feel as though I may be stuck in a catch 22 situation. If you guys have any ideas or sugestions i am all ears .

Try soaking it with PB Blaster for a couple days then if all else fails drive the car to your local machine shop. I would snug the lock nut back up just in case.
