Forked Road
So in the nice cold minnesotan weather I have noticed a few things.
My engine periodically misses, even when warm [In sub zero temperatures]. It also is a little shakey. Could this be caused by bad timing, and how exactly do I go about checking my timing? Any other ideas on what could cause a miss, dirty injector, bad lines??? 1984 300d Turbo Diesel, auto. |

Any possibility your fuel has thickened a little with the cold temperatures? If so it might be possible to suck a little air into the system easier as the suction load would be greater. Just a thought probably wrong. Or could just be a product of the fuel not winterized enough. They sell seasonal additives at truck stops to help deal with this problem and also the presence of any moisture in the fuel system to prevent ice formation. The sales of fuel conditioner in the wintertime are substantial and worth trying. Again just my opinion. I might also wonder if any amount of water has accumulated in the lower area of the fuel filter and is freezing. Natural place for water to gather. Not enough to kill car but perhaps enough to cause some difficulties.

There are so many things it could be. Make sure the fuel is not gelling up in the low temps is the first thing I think I would eliminate.

"how exactly do I go about checking my timing?"
thats not as easy to do as with a gasser. Proly dont want to think about that just yet. Check in the archives, youl find plenty about "drip and "bubble" methods
