I have to press (hard on the rotary dail to make the heater work -Ie get the defroster to work--- once the car is warmed up and driving at highway speeds I really dont need the blower at all, it still will roast me out without the blower even coming on.. are these rotary switches known for bad contacts ? or should I look at something else----

Climate Control Unit...there is a horizontal plastic cover you pop...you will see on big board and two little boards on each end at 90 degree angles ...well the dimwits that designed that did a big no-no there....they made solder joints act as a mechanical connection as butt joints...very bad...they crack from vibration....use a 25 watt soldering iron....use ONLY rosin Core solder..nothing else...resolder each of those corner joints.use no more that a tiny bit of fresh solder to help it reflow...bet you have a few cracked. The buttons and dial are usually good..its solder joints that fail most often.
