The woodruff key is a small part that helps to compensate for moderate chain stretch. There is a proceedure to check for the timing chain stretch to establish if one is indicated. Enough of a proceedure to get the boyfriend involved if he is mechanically inclined. You do probably have the oil bath filter. On the off chance it has never been removed and cleaned or perhaps in a long time it is a managable task that should be done anyways. I tend to agree with a previous post that if you are getting about twenty miles per gallon in around town driving only you may not have many miles per gallon that can be picked up. On the otherhand if that is on the highway then yes you are somewhat low.It also could be a problem caused by a combination of things that have accumulated with age and miles combined. Does car smoke excessivley for example? What colour is the smoke? For this you might have to compare it to a known simular car for starters unless really excessive.

I didn't read that part 20mpg around town isn't that far off. These are heavy cars with little engines they really need to work to get them up to speed.

If you were mechanicly inclined and were able to check all this stuff yourself it may be worth it. But it probably isn't worth having a shop spend $500+/- to pick up a few mpg's around town.

was there an estimated mpg when the car first came out? all i have been told is that it should be getting more... quite a bit more. but to be honest, i really have no idea whether the 20 mpg is around the estimated mpg (if there was an estimate). thanks for the help thus far...

I don't know about EPA claims but I would expect mid 20's at most.
