Relocating the EGR inlet

I was wondering If I would be breaking any laws if I moved my EGR inlet somewhere else? Since I have an 85 kalifornistani emissions 300SD it has an oxidizer trap to catch all the carbon. If I were to relocate the EGR inlet from the exhaust manifold to after the oxidizer trap it would keep my intake manifold clean. I know they did this on later models and it would function just the same but is it legal?

If you ever go to a pull a parts like junk yard take a real close look at the intake/exhaust on a 1979 300SD and get a good view of the down pipe.
