Audi has great ambitions to win LeMans with a Diesel

Their R-10 is powered by a 650 hp TDI w/ 12 cylinders and has an impressive torque of 1100 Nm.

Check it out on Audi's R-10 website:
http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/experience/motorsport/r10.html

Also, don't miss their Paris presentation avi - Germans talking English

As I posted on AZAUDI.ORG , the Arizona based Audi enthusiast website where I post even more often than here, re: this topic...

What, exactly, will it take for diesel power to get a foothold here? I know, Euro diesel has different sulfur content, there are coming emissions standards which will make diesel hard to do in the States, but these are all smaller issues. Of course the diesel market is small, there aren't many offered. The MB 320CDI, the VW TDIs, and the Jeep Liberty CDI have all (AFAIK) done well in the marketplace; at least none has tanked (Like the Phaeton)...

What do they need to see to be convinced to sell Audis with a nice TDI powerplant here? Letters? Deposit checks?

Given the dumb OBD nature of emissions tests around here, my idea probably wouldn't work; I've actually thought about buying a B5 A4 at auction as a non-runner (prolly timing belt breakage) and installing a VW 1.9 TDI in it! Hmmm, the V6 A4 interior trim combined with 40 MPG, add upgraded suspension/wheels/tires? Tempting sub $10K used car buy? I think so...

As a diesel fan and an Audi fan, I cheer this development, but I wonder why America won't wake up. It can't be the aftertaste of the GM 350... look at large pickup sales. Who buys the Magnum in a Dodge 3500 when the Cummins is available? Diesel is accepted in trucks/SUVS, and the TDI is VW's arguably most unique selling point. I can't figure it out...

Does anyone know the tale of the Cummins powered Indy car from the 1950s? It was designed to run the race without a refuel!

I believe it qualified on pole and led something like 45 out of 50 laps, and then the air intake hose came loose and she sucked in a big wad of sand and it was the end of the line. CART banned diesels the following year.

actually

cummins ran at least three times. the first time in the thirties i think maybe 37. it was a non turbo and i believe it ran without refuelling. they came back at least twice more, winning the pole with freddie agabasian in i think 1950. but the engine was very heavy and the car was a beast on tires. the four lap pole run wore out the tires to the point it was dicey to get it in wo blowing a tire, so they had to run gently in the race. cant remember the outcome but they didnt win.

i ran some posts here prob four months ago after looking it all up to refresh my memory, so if you run a search for cummins you can prob find it.

cool stuff.

so i checked

again. cummins ran in 34. finished 12th at an average speed of 88+.

they ran again in 50 and finished and qualified 27 or 29 and went out on lap 52 with a broken supercharger.

in 52 they came with a $500k car built by frank kurtis with a radical lay down design. a turbocharged 401ci lay down version of their truck engine. it qualified on the pole but never led a lap and finished in high twenties, going out with a clogged supercharger (that is what it says) after 72 laps.

this is from the indianapolis 500 chronicles dated 1998.

fun stuff. everything old is new again.

If you want to mod a TDI... the production VW V-10 TDI in both the Phaeton and Toureg can be used to obtain 525 hp
http://www.perkins.com/perkins/cda/articleDisplay/1,4094,7___32_____7_10022049,00.html

BTW it looks like the R-10 will debute in Sebring this March!! I can't wait, I hope the speed channel carries it!

This is the day I've been waiting for! I called this 2 years ago to a friend who races Porches. He said the diesel engine will never be able to keep up with gasoline engines.
I hope Kristensen has another Le Mans win in him, so I can rub my buddies face in it

go to either

www.americanlemansseries.com

and find the link for the live race coverage today thru radio lemnasn until 9 pm

or go to

www.racingfanatics.com

and click on the sebring button and find the podcast from jan or feb of the car on the front straight. it is a very deep sound. not whiney like the rest of the cars. it is almost silent and is sneaky quiet for that kind of car.
