Besides pulling the manifold on a 603 is so over hyped. It is childs play and only takes about half an hour if you take your time.
I was just using the GP's as an example. There are other things way more difficult to fix on a 603. How about the engine accessories like water pump, alternator or power steering pump? IP or linkage? All a big PITA just by looking at them. There are lots more electrical sensors and crap on the engine. Imagine having to troubleshoot them. Just as bad as as a gasser.
I'm not trying to bust your chops H-guy. This is merely my opinion.

... Oh, and Power Service DK is a must. This particular diesel DEMANDS it for every tank.

I wonder what causes that?
My SDL consistently accelerates quickly, if I just give it some pedal.
I mostly baby it though, because I'm still trying to get the vacuum adjusted right.

No fuel additives of any kind. 30mpg on the highway and 21 on my little island.

I changed the water pump, alt, and tensoner on mine and they were all pretty simple and straight forward to change. The water pump is a snap. But remember the W126 has a lot more room up front then the W124. My power steeing pump has a slight weep and I think I'll rebuild that this winter, it looks like a super simple job to get it off.

The 603 has less linkages then the 617, I just spray mine with McLube once a year or so. I snaped one off and had to replace it but it was only $12 so no big deal. As far as sensors their really are not many, ELS maybe thats really about it.

It depends on what you are comfortable with. I'd have no problem working on an M120 or CDI.

The 603 is 6gallons of engine in a 6 gallon bucket

The 617 is 5 gallons of engine in a 6 gallon bucket (the w126 body)

The 617 is easier to work on than a 603...hands down.

Less wires, less sensors, smaller engine, easier plugs, easy IP access (ALDA).

Its simple...smaller engine in same size bay is automatically easier to work on.

Now if you want to talk DESIGNS or engineering then thats a whole nother boat.

But ease of working on one or the other? 617 hands down. The less you got to work on and the simpler the design the easier.

Just my thoughts...you guys can argue about other stuff.

common guys whats the argument about??? its so freaken obvious the 617s are easier to work on... dont get me wrong .. i got a 83 300sd, with only 58.000 miles... i mean cherry... and i also have a 87 300sdl with 141.000 miles.. and believe me , yes the 603 might seem like the luxury edition.. but hey who started this s**t..huh.???? the 617..... and man i love looking at the 603 engine, but i heit working on it... its like a gasser.. with all the bull s**t electronics.. it just turns me off as far as thinking about a real diesel.. the real diesel is the 617 .. and i also got a unimog which i love, the 617 is alot like the unimog... enough said... my everyday driver is a 2004 s600 biturbo... i love the f*****n thing.... but at the end of the day when i settle in... when i need to make a trip to the liquor store for some scotch, i take my 617... and yes it feels great... my main point is ... the 617 is simple.. and thats what we all love about it...... peace..

Electronics bah you can remove the battery on a 603 and drive it accross the country.

CDI's have electroncis. 603's have a few minor electrical sensors that never give you any problems.

If you think a 603 is challenging don't pop the hood on a CDI you will freak!

We aren't comparing the CDI to a 603...we are comparing a 617 to a 603 cheif

Don't go trying to downplay the complexity of the engine with a 20 year newer model
