Burning used Motor Oil?

i was reading through the WVO threads that are sticky at the top of the forum. i saw that people are using used motor oil in their fuel? is this true? what do you do to the motor oil? this seems weird, but i got about 10 gallons of used motor oil waiting to get hauled off to the dump and before i toss it i thought "what the heck maybe it works"

sure.. if you want to screw up your engine with the junk in the oil .. its best to just burn it in a turk burner or disposes of it legally

I see nothing wrong with burning used oil in with the fuel, the large trucking companies have been doing it forever. I burn around 20-25% in my service truck on a regular basis. If you try more than this, you get major amounts of blue smoke and a decrease of power.

I have not done it with the 300, but I might

I burned all my old waste oil on my trucks, a pair of 8v71 T's and it went through like fuel. We usually didn't put more then 10% in, but I think it would take a lot more before loosing some power. Burned quite a few gallons of ATF also.

10% huh??? my dad has been using diesel for years to wash the oil systems in his gassers... he puts about a gollon of diesel in insted of oil and runs the car for like 10 min and then drains it agian.. diesel does a great job breaking down the oil (diesel come out discolored)... so it seems it would work... the diesel would break down the oil enough for it to run as fuel.

maybe i'll filter the oil and let is stand in a clear container first so i know exactly what is going into my car. and then mix at 10%...

If you find a way to get it anything but PITCH BLACK let us know immediately.
I've got a few gallons settling for a long time that I may run through a fabric filter and blend in at maybe a gallon per tankful.

I filter it in a 1 micron bag filter before dumping it in the tank. I try to stay under 50% otherwise it starts to idle a bit rough and smoke / stink a bit. I ran 99% one time and it ran it fine other then heavy blue smoke and a rough idle.

Hey forum members...Don't do this to your fine German engines. Diesel dilution of engine oil can destroy an engine...running an engine for even 10 seconds with only diesel as lubricant is something I would never do to my engines. Most modern oils have detergents in them already, but if one wants to clean the lube system of an engine, there are products such as Rislone etc. that can do it without risk of ruining a good engine. I expect SN84 will counter with another "my Dad has been doing it for years..." or similar, but I don't care ...this is simply an unnecessary and risky thing to do to an engine.

Burning used oil in small concentrations with fuel is virtually risk-free compared to the above. The main risk is possibly shortened injection pump and/or injector life. (Some of the clearances in an injection pump are very tight.) Pre-filter the oil ,Use quality Fuel filters ,change filters often and it is probably a minimal risk...but is it worth it?

That stuff will never separate. Remember, diesel rated lube oil has additives that help suspend the soot.

I had two thoughts after reading this thread:

First, from now on we will need to be very careful buying used diesels. Due to the high cost of fuel, who knows what kind of junk people are trying to burn in these things. You will not know if a used car will need an IP and/or injectors.

Second, I hope that the folks who advocate using their engine as a waste disposal unit will not complain about future emissions restrictions on diesels. This is just the kind of behavior that will be used to justify additional restrictions.

Just my $.02.
