AWESOME FOR A V-8!! I would jump on one of these if they were available in AMERICA

E320wagon'94 12-20-2005 12:27 PM

I saw this a few nights ago on tremec. Its amazing. Clarckson is a nut. Audi should totally sell the A8 Diesel in this market. 40 MPG from a V8, im impressed. Almost makes a E320 CDI look bad.

Adobian100 12-20-2005 12:38 PM

Where can I find one like this in the US ? Thanks

Well an E320CDI gets that kind of mileage with average driving. Not with extremely concentrated economy-oriented feather-pedaled cruises.

Unfortunately, EU4 compliant CDI's have experienced good reduction in actual mpg figures compared with the I6 CDI we have here. At least, that's what I've been hearing from the UK Merc forums.

DslBnz 12-20-2005 02:43 PM

I keep forgetting!

The imperial gallon is larger than the US gallon. His tank held 23.8 US gallons of fuel, and he needed to average, over 800 miles, 33.6 mpg in a V8 twin-turbodiesel Audi. That was the feat.:)

Hatterasguy 12-20-2005 02:51 PM

Well then that is a little impressive, consider this:

Back in 1986 you could buy a 300SDL that with a 23.8 gallon tank capacity could give you a 600 mile range if you keep your foot out of it.

I would expect that nearly 20 years later Audi would be able to make cars that get better mileage and have more power.

However I saw the show it was very cool.

DslBnz 12-20-2005 03:01 PM

Bah, I would consider 25 mpg as abismal for the SDL. I usually average 28 or better, never less than 26(unless the fuel is really subpar). And that's with a lead foot, and with gearing that is significantly shorter than the Audi. The SDL does not do nearly tickover at 50 mph.

Still though, it is impressive given its displacement.

Perhaps I have to question whether those electronic mpg indicators are accurate when dealing with the US CDI. From what I've heard from the UK, the CDI's are not as economical as I thought they were supposed to be.

It DOES make the CDI look bad. I would say AWFUL especially with the V8 and Twin Turbo

DieselCJ 12-20-2005 04:58 PM

Never exceeded 1,200 RPM.

Why not sell a diesel A4 4-cylinder, or an A3 or A2? Do we need another fuel efficient, overpowered, overpriced luxury sedan? Why not a quality, well built car with a stupendously efficient engine that simply has enough power.

I for one am not interested in spending $70,ooo for a fuel efficient car. Geez, I am not impressed so far.

They do sell 4cyl diesel. Remember audi and VW are the same company and they share engines in their cars. The A4 diesel is a VW passat tdi!! The A2 diesel is a jetta tdi!! Our passat got 48mpg coming from the dealer to my house! and this is on winter diesel so that means regular non winterized diesel i should be getting something like 50+ mpg

by the way i love top gear!!!! thats my favorite show!

Diesel Giant 12-20-2005 07:27 PM

Keep in mind one thing. The brits use the inperial gallon which is larger than our US gallon. To be exact, the inperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons.

So his mileage in the US would be 33.33mpg. He got about 40mpg (imperial)

Still good for a v8.
