4spd - What oil?
Hello forumites
Thought it would be a good idea if we had a database of what worked and what didnt in our beloved 4spd manuals. For most, the original spec ATF is becomming hard to source, so a list of alternatives would be helpful . |

Redline MTL (Manual transmission lube).
Since it wasn't one of the choices, I didn't vote. Type A ATF can still be found around here if you know where to look. Good idea to change it. I drained the 5 speed when I first got my 240D a couple years ago and found it was about 1/3 water. (Definitely don't use gear oil)

Without a doubt, Redline MTL. Mail order it if you have to.

Viscosity of Redline MTL is similar to ATF. It is not "honey like" the way gear oil is.

I don't have a Benz manual gearbox, but I use Redline MTL in my Subaru wagon and my Datsun 280Z with the Borg Warner T5.
All the rest of the gearboxes I've dealt with recommend 75W-90 gear lube; I know the WorldClass version of the BW T-5 wants ATF, but I was not aware that any vehicle manufacturer recommended ATF for manual transmissions.

If I had a manual transmission equipped MB, I'd use Mobil 1 ATF.

If I had a 4 speed MB I would try Redline MTL.
It worked better in my old 4 speed BMW than anything else. |

Price is not an issue when it comes to my baby (Benz). What I was wondering was the volume.

As I recall, my 5 speed took about 1.5 quarts. I did the 240D and my Isuzu with 4 quarts, and I have a bit less than a quart left over.
