funny smell inside cabin

All-
Driving back from Christmas break all of a sudden I smell this burnt electronics odor inside the car. Usually the car has a crayon odor and the burnt electronics smell came on suddenly as I was cruising down the interstate. A little background- the pushbutton CCU had been replaced by one I got from a junker and repaired by soldering a jumper wire to connect 2 points that were joined by a trace on the underside of the main PCB that had burned out. Interestingly enough this same EXACT occurrence had happened on the pushbutton unit that originally came with the car. They both burned up in the same spot! Anyone else experience this and have any theories as to why it happened?
Anyway I have a sneaking suspicion that the CCU burned something out again, hence the telltale smell. The heater still works fine, fan speeds work, all the lights on the buttons are lit, blower comes on when heat becomes available just like before. I haven't tried the AC yet but I suppose it works, it worked before with the original burnt up pushbutton CCU. Going from hot to cold still takes a few minutes as it always did, but I just accepted it as the vac pods leaking thus something that I would live with for now. Does anyone know anything about this?

Year, make, model???

That sounds almost like the aux pump toasted CCU.

Aux. Water Pump takes out CCU

'85 D, in my sig

makes sense, thanks
I think I will go with a rebuild from General Development Labs instead of a new unit($185<$400)
Or maybe I shall try another repair? Hmmm.... I'll just be sure to get a new aux pump and put a 12amp fuse inline
Thanks all

Haven't folks been posting about putting in a 1.5 or so amp fuse in the hot to the aux pump?
(going from my poor memory, so ignore me if I'm whacked.....)

I really need to do this, I bought the fuse holder and some fast-blow 1A fuses....now I just need to get it in on my car but it has been raining and icky...and the 83 has made residence in the garage.... Gotta get that car finished so I can drag mine in there and work on it.

Getting more paranoid by the day!!

The funny smell on mine turned out to be the fuse holder for the aux fan which is also connected to the AC. The plastic parts around the fuse melted which gave out a really frigthening smell. Thought the car ws burning. I used the wrong kind of fuse. I bypassed that line since then .
