Missing Rear 300TD Headrests: Where have they all gone?
When I bought my 300TD, it was missing the three rear headrests. It took me a long time to find replacements for them and at a cost. I noticed that a lot of Mercedes wagons on sale on Ebay and elsewhere are missing the rear headrests. Where have they all gone? They very rarely appear on Ebay? To sellers of 300TDs, do you keep them as souvenirs? Or are they like socks that disappear into the blackholes and lost for ever?
An example is this 300TD, the rear headrests are missing! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-300TD-1985-300TDT-STATION-WAGON-W123-TURBO-DIESEL-WARRANTY-FL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6330QQitemZ4599149578QQrdZ1 |

The rear headrests did not come on all wagons. Seems like they only came on wagons with a 3rd seat in back. My wagon has a 3rd seat which appears to have come from a different car, and it doesn't have the rear headrests. Seems like it would be very dangerous from a whiplash standpoint to have a rear passenger without them.
I would love to find a rear seat assy in blue with the headrests, as my youngest daughter won't ride anywhere but the 3rd seat.

The 3 middle seat headrests were only installed IF the third rear seat was installed. No third seat, no headrests.
My 82 came with no third seat. But I bought another 82 300TD that had the third seat. I then transfered the third seat and headrests to the 82 300TD I currently have before selling the bad 300TD. I did buy the receivers inside the seats form the dealer as a kit back in 1993, installed them and swapped the headrests. In the Ebay post you list. Look at the picture that has the middle seat. Notice the top of the seat does not have the 6 receiving holes for the headrests. Dave

Even so, I've noticed many 210 and 124 wagons with the rear headrests missing, and those models came with rear headrests standard, whether they had a third seat or not.
