Air Cleaner Bracket woes...

Can anyone fill me in on the difference between the 2 types of aftermarket aircleaner brackets that fit my 83 300D. Mission Trading Co. Vs. Peters? I want to get the better of the 2, but I am a cheap SOB at heart..... Also, while taking this apart I discovered the hose that runs to my boost sensor was dry rotted and cracked. It is the braided line on the front of the Turbo, correct? What is the diameter on that line...I can't get the online shop manuals to load....

As always, help appreciated.

Neil

Can't help you with the difference between the brackets, however, the hose that you have described appears to be the wastegate hose. It runs from the turbo to the wastegate and does not run to the "boost sensor".

Here it is:

I think it's 3/8 hose. If you take a piece of it to Advance or Autozone, you can get a stretch for $2. If you order it on-line as a "Turbo wastegate hose", it will be at least $20.

My parts car had a nearly new air cleaner bracket when I got it. Yet, I had already welded up the other one, adding a few SMALL gussets (there isn't room for a lot) where I thought it would help. That must have been about 5 years ago, and the welded bracket is doing just fine. I'd like to pretend I'm a good weldor, but there is too much evidence to the contrary So, IMHO, a decent weld repair on that bracket will last a long time.

The brackets will only last a few years. You can thank the vibration machine for that.

I think that as engines get older they leak/blowby more oil. This oil gets on the air cleaner mounts, which are already weakened by age/heat/ozone etc. They fail, then the air cleaner starts moving A LOT more, eventually breaking the bracket. Try replacing those vibration mounts, they are much, much cheaper than the bracket. Stitch in time...............

I think you've got something there, Pete. I took a look under the SD today and the air cleaner comes within 1/4" of the valve cover. If the vibration mounts are toast and the air cleaner hits the valve cover, this, IMHO, is the beginning of the failure of the bracket.

I see that ************** has some type of rubber pad to go between the air cleaner and the valve cover. IHMO, this is not required if the proper air cleaner mounts are used and the engine mounts are in good shape.

The 617 in the SD hardly vibrates at all. In its current state of tune, I'd be very surprised if it can ever hit the valve cover and would be further shocked if the support bracket failed.
