Wastegate hose? What wastegate hose?

My 83 300D Turbo.

While Im taking pics under the hood, heres a pic of whats left of the wastegate hose.

Yes, that mushy thing in the middle is my wastegate hose....I didnt realize it until now, but that hose looking like that is probably making me lose a lot of boost....

This is interesting since I'm considering adding a boost controller. So, at this point, if the hose is not even solid, i.e. broken and messed up like that, I'm probably losing most of my boost eh?

Sorry for the silly question, I'm still trying to learn the car. At least the front end is safe now!

When I got my '85, the hose wasn't even connected. I didn't notice a difference when I hooked it back up because at that time I didn't know my ALDA line at the manifold was broken as well. That will dump a good part of your boost if its not intact. You can order the 9mm(I think) hose off of fastlane but 3/8ths fuel line works just as well, so far.

I thought the wastegate hose has to be silicone to handle the high temps of the turbo?

Possibly. Mine held up for a year before it was wrecked. Can't say what would have happened in a longer amount of time.

I'm a couple of states away from my cars so when I get back I'll look at the '85 to see how the fuel hose held up and at the '84 to see what shape its in.

you will overboost without that hose on there..........even with it venting to the atmosphere..........that hose supplies pressure to the wastegate acutator and at one point will override the spring pressure holding it closed and open it when the designed boost pressure is met.

I would think the opposite effect.... if my hose wasnt busted, when I drive, the wastegate is closed until it senses a certain level "X" boost, at which time it will open and vent excess boost pressure.

In my case, this hose is not connected to the wastegate, or has a big hole in it, the wastegate will never open, because all the excess boost is being blown out into the engine, so its a constant leak; so thats why I was thinking I would be losing a lot of my boost, its all going out the wastegate hose to the wastegate, which is looking for X amount to open, but since the hose has a hole in it, it never opens, but then again, part of the boost is being lost through the hole......Right?

Oh you will lose some boost....but not enough to prevent overboosting it at higher RPM's (higher load) , at lower rpms (or lower load) you may very well experience a boost loss.

Howver you may want to check your overboost protection solenoid....I will lay odds its not doing its job....becasue car would run like crap if it was.
