how much to r and r the auto in a 300cd?

so how much do you all think is a fair price to r and r the auto in a 82 300cd? my indie quoted $500. 300 seems more like it. they are charging about $70/ hr.

It costed me $1100 to replace the tranny in my old 1979 300CD, but I also had a very good tranny shop do the work...

Yes, I'm afraid the days of doing an R & R of a transmission for $300. are long gone.

Hell, I paid $95.00 just to flush the transmission.........and I provided the filter and gasket.........and this is from a fellow that I know for 20 years.

By the time all is said and done, you might as well buy a rebuilt one off the shelf from a reputable rebuilder. Why? Seems like alot of the time when an independant does it, there are unforseen "extra parts" involved that raise the price of the rebuild. This is not necessarily on purpose by the local guy...it's just seems to happen that way alot.

i was talking

about taking my old tranny out and installing a used tranny that i have in stock. no rebuild involved.

i think most of you saw it that way but i am not sure.

so six hours at 70 is about 420 plus some fluid i guess 490 is about right unless they give me a break cause i am such a nice guy!

oh well it makes the stick conversion pretty attractive 'specially since i don't really know for sure that the automatic is good.

thanks for the comments, guys.

not my question

i know the ins and outs of a manny conversion. just questioning my indies 499 estimate to remove and replace my auto with a used one that i have in stock.

and for about 1000 i can have the labor and ds shortening done for a manual conversion from automatic. i have all the parts (major ones) in stock.

sounds a tad high

I had a transmission shop do an R&R with a rebuilt from Sun Valley a few months ago and they charged me $300 plus $80 to replace the rear main seal while it was accessible.

I can still get a RWD tranny replaced around here for about $200.00, R&R. Front wheel drives and 4x4s cost more, but RWDs are fairly cheap. Then again, I'm cheap and generally do my own.

the major repairs

usually go to my indie and his years of expertise, but much to my surprise, I found the transmission shops that specialize in this work and have all the right equipment view a Mercedes R&R as just another transmission. Hell, they probably put two guys on it and had it out and in within two hours.
