Saw a red one of these on I-94 just last week. I go right past the DC Proving Grounds every day on my way to/from work, so sightings not unlike the one quoted in the article above are not uncommon here. Sometimes one of ol' Henry's or The Gernerals prototypes will pop up as well!

I find it really hard to believe that Chrysler would use a VW engine in there. Much more likely is a VM Motori engine like this: http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/00/01/dettaglio.jsp?id=8

The VM 2.8 liter is used in the Jeep Liberty CRD. Maybe somebody got confused and said VW when they meant VM.

I couldn't help noticing the similarity to the back of the garbage truck in the photo.

I'm not getting my hopes up - the liberty CRD's cant break out of the 20's in MPGs, yet the E320CDI's (with more power, cylinders and displacement) seem to do so at least half of the time...so what would this have ? 100-200hp and 30-40mpg ? sorry, the TDI wagons can better those numbers...

Now, yes, the price difference isnt small between a CRD and a CDI isnt small, but come on DCX, those rich mercedes guys can have their cake and eat it too..why cant I ?

There's a reason for that. The Liberty CRD is a 4300 pound 4x4 SUV with the aerodynamics of a concrete block.

From a business standpoint I do not think that it is necessarily bad for DCX to purchase the VW TDI. If there is a proven product why not buy it rather than 'reinvent the wheel'. I have known a few people that have had the TDI engine and they have been rather pleased with it. Last Year I looked at buying a new Jetta TDI and I was impressed with its low end torque, especially for its displacement. The thing that I do not care for on the TDI engine is the timing belt, but then I am a bit old school on that line. In regards to using the VM engine I am guessing that the TDI engine is more compact than the VM engine. It could also be a capacity issue which is another business reality to consider.

I hope that this car does well just from a diesel marketing stand point. I would consider one in about 1-2 years. I would like a smaller diesel than my E-Class and Mercedes does not offer the C-Class in a diesel in this country.

FWIW back in 2001 when I was living in France for a summer, I rented a "Premium Car" from Hertz there (here with Hertz, Premium is a Crown Vic or Marquis) there, it was a Ford Mondeo (Contour) Touring (wagon) with a 5 Speed Manual and the 1.9L VW TDI!! I was shocked, but thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of it

Thats not even possible, the lowest I have ever gotten with my SD/617 is 18.4mpg when I was hauling 750 lbs of cargo + my friend and I for a total of around 1000lbs....+ car....5000+ lbs going down the road at 80mph + when I got into pennsylvania I was going up grades where I was probably in the low teens with my mpg's (3rd gear, pedal to floor, was barely hitting 45mph up some hills due to my load) Huge fuel consumption.

11? yeah right. They get around 22-26 average I think...Like a sprinter does.

i drove a tdi 5spd jetta um, jan 2003 and got it to 100 on the hwy in 5th with no effort and no fuss or noise from the engine. just awesome performance. then i drove the passat automatic and it was much the same if a little slower in acceleration.

if i had the money and wanted the timing belt change expense i would pop for one in a heartbeat. still would like the cdi but maybe in 15 years.
