Angry Anyone just hook up a cable to manually kill the engine?

Okay, I am sick of my vacuum system in my 76 300d. Anyone put in a cable to manually pull down the fuel rack rather than opening the hood each time? I will work on the vac system later when I have more time since it would be fun to have it working properly.

It's pretty easy to just isolate the source of your problems (unless it's the shutoff valve that's NG), rather than rig something up in the meantime. Do you know where the prob is? If it isn't the SO valve, just unhook all the accessories running on the same line, and tape off the holes for the time being. All you really stand to lose is the Central Locking System.

I had an old Peugeot diesel that had a broken $100 engine shut off, they used an electric motor/cable setup, like a power sunroof. I just ran a rope through the firewall and tied it to the IP shut off lever.

There is a hose that comes from the back of your injection pump up the firewall and over to the driver's side where it connects with other vacuum hoses. Disconnect this hose where it connects to the othere hoses. Start your engine and suck on the hose. You can use your Mighty-Vac hand pump if you are not into mouth-to-hose resuscitation. If sucking on the hose makes the car stop then you have a leak in the vacuum system or problems with your vacuum pump. A leak in the vacuum system is most likely the problem. If the car doesn't stop then you have problems with the shut off system diaphram in the injection pump.

It should take less time to track down the problem and repair it than make a bracket and route a cable.

If the problem is a loose or disconnected fitting, you will be amazed at how easy it is.

If the problem is leaky door locks, disconnect them and fix them later, you can lock/ulock the door with a key.

A bad vacuum switch on the 'ignition' tumbler, which is rare, will be more of a bother.

A 300D that I was looking at, had a rope attached to the lever. The rope was rounted out the side of the hood, between the hood and fender. I guess it was the passenger's job to shut off the car.

Update

Okay, First thanks for all the helpful information!
I did take 10 minutes and play with the vac system. I am going to take some pictures and post them so everyone knows what I am talking about. I did verify that the pump is pulling a vacuum, and I also did the suck on the pump hose, and it killed the engine easily.
I have some green and yellow hoses routed into the drivers fender and I believe that is for the locks. There is a dark hose with a blue stripe going into the firewall near the steering wheel that is attached to the pump, and a dark hose without a stripe going from the main vac line into the same location on the firewall.
I assume they both hook to the actuator on the key.
I will get some pics and post a little later this evening.
Thanks everyone!

Mine will shut off if I stick a golf tee in the connector closest to the drivers side fender...... I dont know what its called...

As much as I love fastlane, they dont carry a part thats nessisary for vacuume work. Spend $30 and replace your U bend tube, and the connectors from the AZ source

If you want, I'll see what does what for you, but Its really easy to stick a golf tee in the connector and see if it shuts off. If it doesnt, try the other one...

buy/borrow/steal a vacuum gauge, you CANNOT do vacuume work without one

And for a really temporary fix on the connector, take the plastic insert out, and wrap it with electrical tape (bigger diamiter, less airsuckage)

How about a throttle linkage mod to allow you to pull up on the pedal to kill it.
That rope will rot over time.

If you want to be high tech you could wire up an extra cruise acutator on the fender somewhere, run a wire from its lever to the rack stop lever, and then put a pushbutton "On/Off" button in the car to move the rack from "Run/Kill" I bet it'd work quite well!
