There are a lot of them around here (Vermontville MI). Is it cheating to call yourself off-grid if you don't use electricity? The carpenters do it all with air tools and a 5hp Briggs&Stratton generator. Paying somebody to drive them around when absolutely necessary is probably far cheaper than owning a car would be.

i always got

a kick out of the german baptist around here, a lot of contractors in the trades are gb.

they can't have a tv at home but they can come over to your house and watch...and drink your beer!

but they wear those button fly pants like the amish.

they might drive a caddy or a big buick but it will have the whitewalls turned in. and the radio taken out. and it will be a dark color like black grey blue or green.

oh well, we all have our contradictions.

How on earth anyone could make a theological argument for turning whitewalls inward is absolutely beyond me. "No car", fine. "No flashy whitewalls", maybe. "Turn your whitewalls inward" to avoid the wrath of God... wow...

when i was a kid in greencastle indiana

there was a lady doctor (ours actually). Dr. Ann. she had a big dark green lincoln four door (kennedy car). she had the whitewalls turned in too. i dont think it was religeous. she just didn't want her car to look too "flashy". the culture in the midwest is very agricultural. it is ok to have money but it is not ok to be "flashy".

i embrace it. mercedes diesels is a good example. expensive but not flashy. i had a lovely red one once. didnt keep it long. i had another excuse but i think the real reason i sold it was it was too "flashy".

Not that long ago most tires that you could get were whitewalls. Small trucks tended to use 14" wheels at the time too, and the best deals were always on whitewalls in those "car" sizes.

I always had the whitewalls turned inward.

To me it seemed to be more convenient in terms of maintenance and looked better. Obviously it was the trend as it is now harder to find whitewall tires.

A friend used to work for the county maintenance dept.
One time he was sent to get new tires on one of the work trucks. That particular tire happened to be availible only as a whitewall, so my friend figured if it didn't cost any more for the white strip, why not have them mounted with the white showing. The county got so many citizen complaints about wasting taxpayer money on whitewalls, that they had him go back to the shop and waste some more, turning the whitewalls inside!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Whitewalls are something that has really gone out of fashion.

I guess as soon as a couple of rappers start using them,
they'll be all the rage, just like the 20"+ rims.

On the "bling-bling" cars with the silly 19", 20", or 22" 'dub' wheels on them, they'd be some pretty narrow whitewalls, because there's not much tire sidewall there to begin with!
