knocking in steering wheel!!??!!

I have a really annoying knocking sound right up inside my steering wheel in my 71 220d. It knocks when I go over bumps, or shake the wheel from left to right. Any guess as to what it is, and How can I remove the center piece of the steering wheel (the viynl donut shaped thing with the MB emblem in it) without damaging it?

Thanks

A badly worn steering coupler will sound just like something loose in the steering wheel, plus it displays all the symptoms you describe. You'll find the coupler right up next to the steering box, you'll probably find it well worn and the three bushings probably shot. While loosely holding the shaft have someone work the wheel back and forth...you should feel, and probably see the shaft clunking.

The center hub of the steering wheel should pull right off.

Hey, Thanks! That seems to be it.

How much trouble is it to change? Do I do it from above - like taking the wteering wheel off, or from below by taking the steering box off?

it is an under hood part.

it is the link between the steering column and the steering box.

and dont drive it til you fix it! you dont want to experience the thrill of driving with no steering!

Here is one of many posts regarding steering couplers, http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=132491&highlight=steering+coupler

it is this most recent how-to for a 108 I believe, but the process should be similar.
