ATF mix in fuel, improved perf & fuel consumption..
Hello:
I've heard & read different opinions about mixing ATF that will clean the injectors. So I decided just give it a try. "Of course I would not try this on my daily vehicle". I was very luck to come across a 83 300TD with 378,000 km in very good shape for $ 600.00 Can. This 83 300TD was running o.k, but it shakes, smokes like chimny, no power & bad gas mileage etc. I did 3 full tanks test without any ATF mix, I was getting 21(us) mpg, "50/50 city/hwy" (average 35mph in city & 55 mph on hwy). So I did another 3 full tanks run, I added 2 litres of ATF into my first full tank of gas, it was smoking even worse then before, in my mind I said to myself " Stupid! why 2 litres?", so there was nothing I could do except to drive it. After 300km, I've noticed that it was running smoother, less smoke & more power. So this tank I got 23mpg 50/50 again. This next test I added 1.5 litre into the tank & .5 litre into the main fuel filter mixed "with fuel", oh boy, it was smoking & shaking for approx 15 min, but shortly after that, the smoke reduced almost to none & the engine became so smooth, Wow!!! This tank the score was 26mpg ( 50/50). So the third tank I added only 1 litre of ATF & it did not improved any perfomance, still @ 26mpg. I'm going to do a Italian tune-up job & valve adjustment next week, hoping to get 30+ mpg. |

From my experience, using ATF has a bit of a negative side to it. Its acts like a detergent and frees up any crap that may be in the tank. Generally recommended to change your fuel filter after doing this.
I have also heard(but not tried) pouring atf into your engine oil, 100kms before oil change. It also cleans up the oil pan, passeges etc........ Use at your own risk.

so are you
calculating the extra liter or two of fuel (atf) in your fuel mileage calculations?
two liters would be more than a half a gallon. if your fill up was 10 gallons lets say but you added two QT. that means you actually burnt 10.5 gal of fuel. which is 5%. so if you actually got 20 mpg, it would calculate to 21 if you didnt allow for the extra fuel. sorry, this just popped into my head. tom w

Using ATF as a fuel additive is not desireable. Using small quantities in low concentrations sparingly is fine like when filling the spin-on fuel filter with ATF during a fuel filter change, but putting ATF in the fuel all the time will eventually cause injector coking.

I read something about ATF leaving ash deposits also.

I put a quart in my fuel once and didn't notice a difference. I think if you already have good injectors you won't notice much of a difference with additives.

I filled to the rim each time, then use amount of fuel & ATF went into the tank to calculate the mileage every time.
I bought this car for 1 reason only!!! I wanted to test how well this 83 300 TD was build, the price was right $ 600.00 Can, condition was O.K 377,000 km, it was running rough. So today I decided to do Italian tune up, this car is equipped 3 spd auto, so I had to use 2nd gear to bring up the RPM, during the tune up, it was reving at 5,500 RPM for approx 20 min "@ 130 K/H", It was only smoking for the first 3 minutes "lots of black smoke" & nothing after. I was very impressed with the result, 1- it is running much better then before, less noise, less shaking when idling, quicker response time, 2- there was no damage to the power trains, 3- at 130K felt like 90 K, very smoth. Now! I have greater respect to German Technology. |

ATF has been used by truckers for decades as an additive. It is more expensive than fuel, but it does quiet the engine down and seem to make it run better. I think your results are due to other things than the ATF, but dozens of years of continued use by OTR truckers leads me to believe that it can't be all bad as suggested here. I use some after running VO, both in moderation. Sam's club VO is getting close to the price of fuel....
