Diesel conversions that keep you up at night.
I've been itching to build a diesel 107 (w or r) or a w126c (300 SDC). It is nice to see it done. Hmm, I just may have to consider this a bit more.
Back, when I was apprenticing, I knew of a fellow who had a 190sl with a diesel motor in it. Slow, but very neat car.

He's probably out searching for one that's made in Korea.
Hmmm... if I could pick up a gutted Pagoda with no drive train... all I'd need was West Coast Customs to Pimp My Ride and I'd be set. |

I haven't checked myself, but someone who did claimed that with the engine at normal height a 617 valve cover would stick up through the R107 hood two or three inches. I once saw pics of a 107 on eBay UK that clearly had a 617 in it, so it is possible, but I don't know what the ground clearance would be. Seems like a 602 or 603 might fit better.

What's the weight difference between a 107 and a 123 or 126? With a little boost and fuel tweaking, it could probably be as fast or faster as the original engined car. The 3.8 liter engines weren't very powerful to start with, but they were lightweight. I wonder if any suspension modifications had to be made, such as springs from a 450sl? Very cool idea, hauling a$$ with the top down on biodiesel, smelling like french fries..

The R107's ride and seats are so stiff that you guys may reconsider. I thought owning an SL was just for short jaunts to the beach, or occasional Sunday summer drives. They also have remarkable pickup.
It's one thing for a car to look GOOD. But if you want to live with an SL, day to day, you'd better be young and fit. One thing about the 107. It commands respect and attention everywhere it goes around here. My teal/cream 560SL was quite a looker. And I netted as high as 21 mpg with the 560, once. Yes, you read right. The M117 above 20 mpg. Must be some kind of a record.

If the finns made the built the engine and put on a manual 5 speed I'd donate my 560SL as a tester... to be transformed into a 300SLD-FMD because in a SL frame it had better be bad ass. Just burning bio-d would not be justice to the car.
