Cost of a new tank, 1982 300D

Anyone know how much the fuel tank for a 1982 300D would be?

I'm weighing that against the cost of having a radiator shop clean it (and rust-proof it) after I discovered rust flecks in a generic fuel filter I installed before the stock pre-filter last night.

Pete.

Any pick-n-pulls in your area? I have no idea how much one would cost there but would a new one be available? Does anyone make them?

I have one from my '80 240D. Will it work? It's in real good condition-pretty clean. Paul central FL

I work for an airline so I get 75% off of FEDEX or DHL. It would be a big box, but light. Probably $30-$35. I figured 25 lbs. 5' X 1' X 18". From Tampa. All I want is $25 for the tank, but remember, it's from a 240D. It may be smaller than the 300D. Check the manual. Paul central FL

I don't know that a few rust flecks necessitates removal of the fuel tank. Get the water out that caused the rust in the first place and keep it out.

Yeah, but it's more than just a few flakes. They clog the filte within 4-5 minutes of driving.

You're probably right, if I get it cleaned at a shop it will be fine...but, I'm weary about so much rust. Would hate to go through removing it (along with my second VO tank), cleaning it, and reinstalling it (along with my second VO tank), only to have to do it all over again if flakes start appearing again.

However....I claim no expertise on this...

Thanks,

Pete.

P.S. Anyone know if the tank in a 300D is the same as the tank in a 240D?

The steel lines rust too so you could be getting some rust from them. Also check out Renu for getting your tank cleaned and sealed. Did it on my ponton ten years ago and it is doing great yet.

I have the impression that at least some 240Ds came with smaller fuel tanks than the 300Ds, so you may not want one out of a 240D.

You are within easy driving range of Potomac German Auto near Frederick, MD. This is an item not in high demand and I'll bet they have a few good examples cleaned and ready to go. A Google search should find their website.

Ah, man! How likely is this? That would drive me absolutely insane if I replaced the tank, but had the same problem because of the hard line and didn't know it. How hard is it to replace this line?

Pete.

240D fuel tank is 17.2 gallons, 300D's have +/-21 gallon tank.

Thanks, Ken.

I picked one up from Potomac german Auto today off of a 1984 or 1985 300D (I don't remember). It's $100 plus $20 to have it shipped to my door by Friday. I know I'm paying a bit more than taking it to a rad shop, but this save me some time and effort.

Thanks, everyone, I'll let you all know how it goes.

Pete.

P.S. I'm not going to the place up the street anymore for diesel, and Startron will be added regularly :-)

P.P.S. I hope this isn't a cruel cosmic joke, and it turns out to be teh hard fuel lines sending rust

I agree on the lines being a more likely culprit. On my '85 the lines were leaking because of rust. I pulled the lines and the tank - I'm going to rteplce the lines but my tank looks brand new after a thorogh cleaning and pressure washing......
