You can also use memory foam from Target, etc. Like a posturepedic pad.....
Like the use of a Volvo heater, but wouldn't need it down here...

"Thoughts?"--Oilburnr

You are trying to reinvent upholstering when there is no need to. Go to the library and find a book about Auto Upholstery or even regular furniture upholstery...
You will find that there are cheap strong already proven materials... burlap, webbing, etc...available to do exactly what you want done...
Which, by the way , don't introduce the possibility of terrible fumes in case of fire....

seat padding material

The stuff you are calling 'horsehair' is probably NOT--it most likely is a wood product called 'excelsior' Horsehair padding will endure for centuries if not infested with rats, fungus (from continual wetting), or insects. Excelsior on the other hand deteriorates to crumbs in a decade or so and is a very poor choice of material for something you want to endure.

Well, I haven't had it DNA tested or anything, but EVERYBODY calls it horsehair, including the people who sell the replacements. On the other hand, NOBODY calls it 'excelsior'.

And I think it is the fact that it is rubberized and pressed together, sitting on metal wire and springs that pulls it apart. If it were just stuffed into a cushion like a pillow, I bet you're right, it wouldn't degrade the way it does.

I replaced my seat frame and pad

I have to say, the old pad was not in bad shape for having 197K on the clock. I really only replaced it because I had a spanking new pad that I bought on EBay, and it seemed like a good idea.

Looked like horsehair to me, with a fair amount of binder/resin and no discernible deterioration compared to the new pad.
The new pad seemed that it would fit the description of "rubberized." I have no real idea what it is made of, but I just hope it lasts 197K with my big ol' butt bouncing on it.

How NOT to buy a MB Diesel:
Know little or nothing about diesels or Mercedes Benz.
Get the WVO fever.
Drive 70 miles to a used car lot in the country.
Buy the car without having it inspected, because it seems like a good idea at the time....
I'll be back. I'm gonna need help.
I love this car already!
