Help with a 85 W124 603 RE: Glowplugs
Man, I love this car and I have only had it one week.
This is my first diesel and as such, I am in the middle of some growing pains. To start off, this is the Euro version 85 300D with the 603 non turbo engine. One of the first topics I have started researching are glow plugs since while starting in the mornings, it starts real rough and smoky for about 10-15 seconds after startup. I thank all of the posters on this forum for the help, but I am either 1-stupid or 2-blind. I can only find 2 of the glowplugs that I think I should have. Where I think the remaining 4 plugs should be, there are 3 torx head bolts and on the last one, some kind of return (please see the pictures, as I have no idea what I am talking about). A gentle nudge in the correct direction would help a lot. Thanks, fantom Pict 1, known (?) glow plugs installed http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1/fantom71/PICT1455.jpg Pict 2, 1 plug plus "empty" socket http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1/fantom71/PICT1456.jpg Pict 3, "empty" plug plus "return" http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1/fantom71/PICT1457.jpg PS am I correct to assume that the "screw-in" fuel filter is immediately to the right (in the picture) to the top radiator hose in this picture? http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c1/fantom71/PICT1458.jpg |

You need to pull the intake manifold to get at the glow plugs. It seems like on the NA engines this may be more of a pita. They are buried under their, if you grab a flashlight and really look you may be able to see them.
Yes the last pick is your fuel filter. BTW that engine is so nice and clean! CA rules! It looks like something is leaking, it may be the valve cover or intake manifold. Is their an EGR on this engine? If so block that sob asap.

Wow, that's one clean looking engine. All of your glow plugs appear to be there. If you look at your third picture, the glow plugs are the ones that sit at an angle, with the braided wire running to them. In your first and second picture, the braided wire is hiding them.
