300DSL change glow plugs

Hello,
Any 300SDL owners that have tips on changing the GPs. Seems to be no direct line to get to GPs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Two schools of thought:

1) Get a bunch of 1/4" extensions and remove them with the manifold in place. It's a PITA, but doable. How many do you need to remove?

2) Remove intake manifold and do them easily. This option is probably better if you have more than one or two to remove.

its pretty easy w the right tools. 1/4 wratchet w 1/4 extension w a universal joint and a 10mm and 12mm socket....youll be done in no time. just remember to position the wratchet so you dont hit any of the injector lines once you get the gp to give. good luck.

i actually find the 300sdl gp easier to change than the ones on my 82' 300d.

Yanking the intake manifold makes it prime time to crank up the ALDA too...

i didnt bother taking the intake manifold off, more work and one more specialty tool ill have to buy and wont use it on anything else. kinda like those valve wrenches i bought for my 300d.

ive read mix reports on the alda adjustment. i dont think mines been touched and i dont plan on cranking it up. how much of a difference have you experienced w the alda tuned up? im hoping to get mine into the shop next week to finally have the head replaced, ive had the car for a month and its been brutal to just being able to stare at it and not drive it around. now that the holidays have past i can get my car running and give back the gas hog im borrowing now (Envoy getting about 270 miles per tank).

if anyone wants to buy an 82 300d that needs a new front end contact me. the engine is fine w 248k miles, just needs some cosmetics.

Very noticable gains with it cranked! Another member did it that I chat with on the IM often and he was shocked at the difference. This was on my L, the one on the SD made a huge difference also.

I can't recall why I pulled it in the first place. Maybe for the wiring? I think that and to install the proper brackets. GPs were done as some were broken on removal! Can we say too much torque?

I ALMOST bought an enitre SDL motor today so I could get some bits off it to sell off. AC comp, turbocharger, etc. It had another updated vac pump too... that's why my L is parked.

Just step right up to the big dog! 500E! I saw one the other day with E320 badge's on it, so cool and evil. Some poor M3 is going to get a surprise.

Perhaps down the line, this 400E is easily 1/5th of the price of nice 500Es. So I'll drive it for a while. Those fender flairs really make the 500E look killer. Remindes me of an old AC Cobra.

I love the fenders, if you don't know what to look for they look like a stock W124.

Thats why I always get a kick out of the "E320" 500E's. You see the big fender flairs and I feel like saying to the guy what sucker buys into those badge's? But then I see a Honda in the next lane with a wing, ahh pray.

You dont need to remove the intake. Just get some univeral joints that fit your 1/4" and some small wrenches and some patience. I just did it on the '86 and while it is not as easy as the 617 engine, it is not a bad job. There are a lot worse cars to change glow plugs on, believe me.
