Is special injector socket necessary? Line wrench?

Hi. Is the special MB injector socket really necessary to remove the injectors or will any 27 mm deep socket do the job?

Also, is there an alternative to the MB 17 mm injector line wrench? Both of these tools are really expensive!

Thanks!

Randy

not ANY 27mm deep socket, but many. The one I bought locally works fine for injectors and crank pulley. About $9, IIRC. Any old 17mm open end works fine for the lines.

Standard craftsman 27mm deepwell worked for me. Make sure not to get the 6 point and you should be fine.

Thumbs up

I too used the Craftsmang 1/2" drive , 12 pt unit.

For the lines I just used the combo wrench. A Crows Foot would work well and perhaps a line wrench.

I second the use of the 27mm deep socket from Craftsman. Fits well and not too costly.

As Pete said, the standard 17mm open end wrench works fine at an angle.

The benefit of having the proper tool is to be able to torque it properly.
As mentioned before a crow's foot will work also.

A regular 27mm Craftsman will work fine. Unless you have a 606 then you need a special socket. Although a thin wall Snap On may work, probably worth a try.

Yes, the Craftsman 27mm 12-point 1/2" drive socket works fine for 61x and 60x injectors. Snap on makes their own socket for MB diesel injectors: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=68171&group_ID=1326&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

What tool for the upper injector line nuts?

Thanks everybody for your input! I went out and got the 12 point 27 mm deep socket and a 17 mm flare nut wrench, which works well on the lower injector line nuts but what about the uppers? I've been trying to find a flare nut crow's foot but to no avail.

27 mm socket Autozone story

Buying 27mm socket for fuel injectors finally pushed me over the edge with AutoZone tools. I will never buy a tool there again if I can help it.

I was getting bosch glow plugs at AutoZone for a 91 Jetta as they were cheap and I needed them quick. you need to pull injectors behind the IP to get at glow plugs behind there. So I bought their premium brand Duralast 27mm deep socket.

It was too shallow. It would only catch a mm or 2 of the injector. So I took the socket to Sears. Sure enough the Craftsman was about a quarter inch deeper and the same price.

"is there an alternative to the MB 17 mm injector line wrench?"

A normal 17mm open ender works fine, you have to fiddle around to figure where and how to fit the wrench at each nut, but no big deal. It'l work at both ends of the hard lines.

and when you

go to put the socket on the injectors, after you take off the return lines the little nipples for them will swivel in to clear the socket.

pretty slick design

Tom, the nipples for the return lines are fixed. If they swivel, you've done and busted one of 'em. Remember, we're talking about the 617.

The only good tool AutoZone has is the large hex key socket for the differential plug.

Also, I have never seen the nipples on my injectors swivel. the socket fits right over them.
