I drive my SUV as my second car in town and for short distances. However, that is my 2nd car, 8500# RV hauler, Dog hauler and sometimes use it for newspaper distribution not to mention other hauling work. Which car can you think of for my second car that will cost less and can do all that? I could buy a station wagon for the dogs and 2nd car and newspaper delivery but I still need a truck for hauling 8500#. The station wagon and truck purchase, plus maintenance, insurance on both vehicles will eat any and all fuel savings alive and then some.
Didn't we have this discussion already at some point? There are some who put their SUV to good use, and you may be one of them, though it depends on how much newspaper you have to haul. I use my wife's Accord to "haul" my two dogs. But yeah for hauling an RV you need something powerful. But the vast majority of SUV/truck owners seem to use these vehicles just for grocery shopping, going to work, picking up the kids, and going to the movies. But hey that's their problem, I'm not the one wasting money on fuel and I don't mind if their wastage leads to even higher gas prices for them to swallow.

Look on the bright side

Once Winter is over the demand for heating oil will go down and petro diesel prices will plummet

You don't think the oil barons would lie to us do you?

I am sure it will bounce around like a tach in an '85 MB.

Maybe so but when you see me driving down the road in my 2nd car, I will be one of those who do use it for grocery shopping, going to work, etc, etc. That is my point. The SUV happens to be my 2nd car just like it is probably theirs. I don't know their situation but many times I have seen them use it as a second car. I cannot afford a 3rd car just for grocery shopping, etc, etc. The SUV is handy from that standpoint. It is like a Leatherman knife. Not a very good anything but it is an all around tool. What would you suggest they do? In our case, it was either a truck or an SUV and since I didn't want my dogs to be in the cold and I wanted the capacity to bring a couple of people along, I got the SUV. Yes, I do use it to go to class or other things because the wife has the MB. How would you suggest people like me conserve? By buying another car to maintain and insure and use the truck for hauling? If you are paying, I'm sure some would take advantage of the offer. I know I would.

I would like to really understand the animosity towards SUVs. AFAIK, men have been driving trucks for decades without so much as a peep. Since SUVs came on the scene, things have changed.

If I really needed to tow something heavy or lived somewhere with lots of snow where the roads don't get plowed, first of all I'd get a diesel to get better fuel economy, probably the Jeep Liberty CRD. If that doesn't meet your towing capacity, there's always the Cummins diesel. But since you already have an SUV, assuming you don't want to sell it, I'd get an old MB diesel or a compact gasser as a 3rd car to do my grocery shopping and going to work when your wife has the newer MB. We have 3 vehicles as well and they're all paid for. In fact there never was any loan on them to begin with and the insurance rate is not bad.

Currently I am toying with adding a supercharger and redoing the tranny for more towing performance. Personally, today, right now, if someone offered me the Expidition with the 7.3L diesel, I'd be all over it since I take my dogs with me on the long trips. It's nice to be able to park the car and keep the engine running with the AC for the dogs instead of leaving just a crack of the window open.

I will look into getting another car and see if I can swing it. I go usually less than 1000 miles a month on my SUV (more like 500) so I have to see what the fuel savings are and whether they would offset the increased insurance. If it will, I will go find myself another car. Maybe even the 91 Station wagon with the 4 matic my neighbour is offering for sale. Good idea.
