Well....unless I woke up in Russia this morning you are not required to carry identification at all times.
If you are caught driving without proof of license or insurance you have a certain amount of time to submit proof of possession. If you submit the proof the charges are dropped. Of course it's a whole lot easier to just have the license and proof of insurance with you.

Now, to the original post. It's been just about a year since the last time I was in Houston. I wish it could have been longer because I'm a country boy, but oh well. At that time at least, 80MPH was at least 15MPH over the speed limit and I would be quite surprised if the speed limit has been raised since then.

Do you think that the police should just ignore the fact that you were breaking the law? That's what they get paid to do you know, stop people that are violating the law. Do you think that they should just take a paycheck and not do their job?

BTW, to those non Texans commenting on Texas speed limits. On the open Interstate or even extra wide two lanes with a wide shoulder about 10 miles or so outside cities, the speed limit is 70MPH Day, 65MPH night. Once you get West of Pecos, Texas where there's nothing alive to hit with a car, the speed limit is 75MPH Day and I don't remember what it is at night.

Have a great day,

Well, up here in Alberta.....

Some lady ripped by a police cruiser while it was stopped on the road, instead of slowing as is the law. We've had a lot of officers killed by this happening, so I'm not really sympathetic that she received a $650 fine for it. Small price to pay for keeping our officers alive, as I'm sure it will be reduced by the time it gets through the courts.

Have a great day,
It's a little different in the Houston area. It used to be 70MPH day, 65MPH night on most freeways outside of Beltway 8, but that changed a few years ago. It used to be that the speedlimits in the counties surrounding Houston dropped to 55 max to improve air quality, but nobody liked that, so the speedlimits were raised to 65 and I expect them to be back at 70 in a few more years.

For example on I-10 WB, the speed limit is 65 from Beltway 8 (I think) to the Brazos River in Waller County. Once you cross the river and enter Austin County, it's back up to 70MPH Day, 65MPH night all the way to the I-410 interchange in San Antonio. On I-10 EB, it's 65 all the way from the Beltway to the Chambers/Jefferson County line. From then on out, it's 70MPH day, 65MPH night until you get into Beaumont, I think it the speed limit does down near US 69. On I-45 NB, the speed limit is 65 from Beltway 8 all the way to the Montgomery/Walker County line. I-45SB is 65MPH all the way from Beltway 8 to the Galveston Causeway where it drops to 50MPH.

I don't mind the idea of doing the ac work, it's just that I finally live my life without having to drive in Houston or Dallas. In the early nineties I had an office in Houston and and an office in Richardson. I knew every bump in the road between the two and drove 60,000 or so miles per year.

Now I work at home, in my pajamas if I want to. The thought of going to Houston or Dallas is like an old retired combat veteran thinking about giving up his retirement to go back into combat.

If you need some advice on your ac though, post or drop me a PM.

Good luck,

Up here the speed limit is 75 with an acceptable deviation up to 85. Of course the sign is posted at 65, its wrong.

Texas must be REALLY bad if you guys are doing A/C work in January! With a wind chill of 56*f today, I'd be in a foul mood too.

Enjoy your heat while I walk through the snow at work.

Read it and weep Lance! As of 11:03 AM CST, Jan 19, 2006 it is 67°F in Austin, TX. Darned right we need to do A/C work in January.

In fact, I just ordered a new compressor, accumulator and expansion valve for my SDL...probably will need them next week.

One of my best friends is a cop. When they ask you how fast you were going, what's your hurry, did you know you were speeding, etc, the answer to that question will be written in the officer's log book. When you come in to fight the ticket and say that you were only going 55, the officer will pull out his book and explain that you told him you didn't know how fast you were going. Who do you think the judge will believe?

I personally think getting frisked because you don't have a driver's license on you is wrong. Either there's more to the story (like mouthing off) or the cop was truly a jerk.

What can you do you gotta pay to play. I sudjest buying a radar detector.

Maybe I am spolied up here but between 75-80 you are usually safe on most sections on I95 and I91. Heck I91 is like the autobahn I never see a cop below 90 on that road, and on a few sections you can usually spool it up to 100 in the left hand lane.

VT is the worst, my Uncle has a cabin up in the middle of no where VT and the local Barny will freaken give you a ticket if you don't count to 5 after you stop at a stop sign. He loves out of towners, my MB is like a target up their.

To "BFD" in particular... No offense taken, but thanks for the thought! Actually I don't see many traffic offenses, unless they're DUIs. I deal with meth heads and cooks, sex abusers of all sorts, and more of the unsavory types. A couple days ago, in an hour and a half before supper we booked in a female for attempted deliberate homicide, and three young studs for armed robbery, assault with weapons and accountability.
Drugs and no sense of responsibility or morality are what's really eating holes in the fabric.
I don't know about where all of you live, but in my neck of the woods, city police indeed can be pretty heavy handed. Mostly because they have plenty of backup available and really sort of operate in a "pack" mentality. The sheriff's deputies, on the other hand, are usually pretty easy to deal with.. typically they're by themselves and backup could be an hour away. Our county is bigger than the state of Pennsylvania and usually there're only about four to six deputies on patrol.
With regards to the original question, however, you really DO need to have your wallet and such with you...

Michigan does not have a 65 mph freeway limit, its 70.

Generally on the highways that are 55 around here, most do 65-70, and on the freeways where its 70, they tend to do right lane around 75-78, and left lane varies from 80ish to 100ish. I've had to do over 100 to pass several semi's around here before....its crazy...

I've gone past a state cop in a turn around clocking people on the freeway, I was doing about 78, just like everyone else. They generally give at least a 10mph grace limit here, maybe even 15. They're waiting for the nuts who go by at 90+, so they can lay a huge ticket on them....
