Toasted Turbo 86 SDL
NEWBY HERE!
BTW....you guys are GREAT! I bought the car in question a few days back in AZ. An 86 SDL w/235k that once I got it home I found that the turbo is TOAST! The blade & shaft on the intake side just flops around like a fish! It dumped so much oil into the exaust that it's dripping out of the tail pipe! At least the KID who I saved it from~ was smart enough to shut it off and get it towed when he noticed the SMOKE SCREEN coming out of the back! His Idiot Mechanic had him put that snake oil for engines that smoke in it after saying it needed injectors and a VALVE JOB~~~LOL! He did that and headed on a trip from LA to AZ! GOT ABOUT 1/2 WAY! So were do I go from here? #1 Need a referall to a good shop in the PHX Valley! #2 Advise on how to deal with the oil in the exaust (just so Im prepaired with the right info) #3 a good turbo rebuilder incase I talk my EX MB tec freind into helping me make the swap! Any and all info is greatly appreciated! Cheers and thanks! AlanT Mesa AZ 86 SDL 93 Dodge cummins 68 Tbird tudor 87 BMW 325E 64 and a 79 Airstream TT |

I have never done this before but they seem easy to rebuild/replace.
You can buy parts individually for about $20 or a drop in replacement for around $250. Parts list: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=809807#post809807 Cartridge replacement: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=111519 More info: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=135489 Eventually the oil in the exhaust will burn away. I wouldn't worry about that. Just get it to stop! Danny

Welcome to the forum.
My "new" '87 did the exact same thing. I tried to make it from Atlanta to New York.........but...........the vehicle had other ideas: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=138131&highlight=turbo I was fortunate to have an indy in Raleigh that wouldn't kill me on the labor (still cost $420.). One of the forum members located a turbo for it at a great price. Removing the turbo is not too bad a job. You can certainly accomplish this yourself. It's also possible to rebuild one of them yourself if you get all the required parts. But, in your case, you might find that the impeller is toast. The turbo on this one moved around the same amount and it was pretty clear that the trap oxidizer damaged the blades at some point. The unbalance eventually wiped out the bearings. If the impeller and turbine are OK, one of these guys will rebuild it for you: http://www.majesticturbo.com/ http://www.forcedperformance.net/services.aspx But, make sure the wheels are not damaged..........otherwise.........it gets very costly. |
