Timing Chain

Where does a person find the tool for the chain links and has anyone used a Beck/Arnley Timing Chain $46.00 @ Kragens and Autozone.

BrierS rents the timing chain crimper. Check the rental list.

FWIW, on my 300D, I used a big steel block and a ball-pein hammer to roll the pin ends over.

If you have a body dolly and a small ball peen hammer (or old sledge hammer head) you could save enough money to buy an OEM chain. Its really easy to peen those pins. The hard part is getting those "side plates" on and off

Two Hammers

I did the SD last summer, pulleys and weights strung up in the carport roof (the pulleys are still there), when it came to getting those sideplates on I ground a notch in a pair of vise grips and squezed then into place. To peen the pin ends on I used a big hammer on the back and a ball pein hammer on the front to peen the ends. I was nervious about this but this is what I did back in the 80's after a chain break rebuild and everything was fine.

Good luck with this project, lets keep these cars running forever.

Wouldn't use a Beck/Arnley chain. In my experience, their products are junk. Go with IWIS which is original.

You can still get the master link that uses either the long c-clip or the two small clips so you don't have to buy the chain crimp tool. It's hard to find, but they are out there.

Good idea...Yah, that can be quite a challange. I understand theres a clip that is for some MB gasser chain, that can be used to pull the new (616/617) chain through. Its easy to get on and off but wont come off during the "pull through". For a couple bucks it might be nice to have.

I may have misunderstood but wasn't there some talk awhile back that the clips were no longer recommended by MB? Maybe that is why they are very rare.

Rare? Surely not! I'll bet there are plenty laying around in lower oil pans!

Where do you buy a IWIS, Dealer? and does it come with the long c-clip or the two small clips?

Click on Fastlane above and Phil can get an IWIS chain no problem.

I also peen the link in place and have had great success. I do want to add something important though;

When you put the plate in place before peening, feel of the plate with your fingers. One side will feel smooth and the other side will have sharp edges. Put the side with sharp edges toward the chain. This gives you the smooth side to peen against. This will give a better peen with more area and no sharp corners to allow the peen to break.

Good luck,

So you hit the prongs(for lack of a better word) with a hammer and that compresses them? What do you use on the back side to keep the pin in place?
