to me a muffler is a muffler, outta sight, outta mind, unless it gets loud....I like things pretty quiet (so why did you buy a diesel? ya, ya...nature of the beast, I know that). I figure these 23 year mufflers are pretty much straight pipes by now....I out grew straight pipes 25 years ago! These days, I don't want them to hear me coming.....I like to sneak up on them now.

Is there any Black Magic involved? Any special air flow, or restriction requirments? Or can I just go get some new mufflers installed?

And NO! I won't DIY on the mufflers. I've had red-hot molten steel roll down my back into my britches ONCE....it will never happen again!

Find a cobbler muffler shop, they can match original muffs with aftermarket components of the same specs then bend their own pipes. Got a complete muffler replacement for my 240D this way. Total cost was less than $200. I dunno why anybody bothers with stock MB system that generally run about $600.

If you ask me, far more noise comes out from under the hood than out from the tail pipe on these cars. Just walk around to the back of the car and listen while some one revs thre engine and compare it to the noise at the front. If you want quiet in a diesel your going to have to sound insulate the engine compartment and have good motor mounts IMHO.

If you really think the exhaust system is the source of the noise you can do like Rolls Royce did and run 3 mufflers in series. Mabey you could install one of these new low temp NOx catalytic converters ( after the turbo ) so you can thumb your nose at some of these eco snobs. Of course these options will eat into your mileage and power as well as cost some $.

Timevalve makes complete stainless systems, if my exhuast ever goes out thats the way I will go.

Although timevalve makes stainless exhaust, their units are not of quality build. I saw 560 euro downpipes that looked pretty amateurish.

After re-reading your question I realise I didn't entirely answer it.

As far as I know there is no specification for flow or backpressure. Of course the more flow and lower backpresure would be better for fuel economy and power. Any muffler will probably work, except mabey a glasspack because it will foul with soot.

I still say more noise comes from the engine compartment than the tail pipe with the stock muffler though.

Last fall I finally got around to a new exhaust system on the 190D, front to back. OEM from Phil, no comparison to the "muffler shop" crap that had been installed by the PO. All new brackets and bolts; easiest system I have ever replaced - took longer to cut the shrink wrap from the pipes than it did to install the system. Total install time - 2 cups of joe or 1hr, 10min.

The last complete MB exhaust I bought was only $30 from the turbo to the tail pipe. I had a wagon I bought that had NO exhaust and man did it sound sweet. The turbo sound was so pronounced. The only problem was that the roar at highway speed was unacceptable.

Brandon...did the search, did find much...too much! The shear volume of info at this site can be, at times, daunting....good news is you can find info, bad news is it'll take you 3 whole days to wade through it!

ConnClark told me all I needed to know within hours and I learned jaonill likes coffee and DieselGaint likes loud exhaust systems...tough to beat that!

After doing the drive shaft on the SD I cut off the center mufflers (gonads) and used a pipe and some clamps to make up the length. I will be making up a center support this weekend.

Result no extra exhaust noise, and the turbo "seems" to spool up faster. funny but the turbo whine seems less now this might be due to reduced back pressure.

exhuasts are very nice and about half the oem price or less. all stock mounting very nice.

on a diesel why bother with stainless. the steel ones last 200k on a non turbo and 120 to 150k on a turbo. maybe worth it on a turbo i suppose.

Yeah there is a WHOLE LOT of exhaust stuff...I guess knowing what I am looking for helps.

Here is a good thread with sound/video clips. Obviously straight pipe is out of the question but there are other clips farther down if you look.
