When I come to a stop, I hear/feel a 'thump'.

Yay! Another f*%*^* problem!
When I come to a stop (as I'm about stopped), I hear/feel a thump underneath the car. Yes, my tranny flares in 3 gears. Yes, my tranny fluid leaks-probably from the tranny seal. No, I have not done any of the supposed 'adjustments' to the tranny (via the vacuum system?) that might help the flaring.
Thanks. Oh, the car I speak of is the MB in my sig.

Definately a vaccum leak. If there's not enough vacuum going to the transmission at the 2-1 downshift, then there will be that "thump" you feel. Get a MityVac and start finding and fixing those leaks.

My father took his car to the dealer with the same complaint back in the 60's. The mechanic simply removed the pop bottle from under the front seat.

Oh man, I spit my beer on that one!

Hey, back on topic (lol), would the flaring be a symptom of a vacuum leak as well?

Shut off your climate control and see if it continues. On my 300TD, when I had a leak in a vacuum pod in the heater, it caused that thump. How are your door locks working?

It occurs regardless of the state of the climate control.
My door locks are virtually inoperable.

With not enough vacuum, it will give a hard shift (and clunk downshift).
With too much vacuum, it will flare.

Hmm...

Plug the line under the hood that goes to the doorlocks. That will stop any vacuum locks thru the locking system.

Interesting topic. I have the same issue on a 300TD (wagon) with the thud/thunk noise when I come to a stop. Trans shifts "ok". It seems as though it could be better. My door lock vacuum does not work as well. My climate control seems to be fine.

What does this mean and where are the guide rods..."sounds kinda like guide rod mounts to me."?

If it is the tranny clunking , I think you will need to adjust the vacuum control valve (some are adjustable) on the back of the IP. If I recall correctly, it needs to provide something like 12-15 inches of vacuum to the tranny at idle as you are coming to a stop. I had this happen on one of mine . Do a search on vacuum control valve and see what the knowledge base says.

My climate works 'ok', but it sure takes it's time heating up. When the outside temp gets under 40 F or so, it never really gets very warm in the cabin...

I assume plugging my vacuum line to the door locks will make them work manually, at least, right?

That's exactly what I was thinking.

His vacuum problems ar eprobably a whole different issue.

Did a quick experiment this evening...

Before coming to a stop I gassed it a little to possibly build a little extra vacuum and it seemed as though the thunking disappeared on those subsequent stops.

Am I possibly reaching a valid conclusion or do you think it was pure coincidence?
