Upper chain guide pin distance out of head
 

I'm finally getting back to finishing up this head job on my 96E300D and after getting the timing chain guide into place and putting in the pin, it seems to stick out further than when I took it out. the wear pattern seems to be about 1/4" from where it's supposed to be. Is there a min/max on the pin in terms of how far it extends from the head?

At least on the 220d, all the thrust pins fit flush to block or head.

Thanks Ralph. The upper one on this model doesn't, but I didn't know by how much. There is a wear pattern that indicated it should seat at least another 1/4" so I re-pulled it. Once I did I noticed a slight edge after the taper end that goes into the cam tower. So I took the grinder to it to give it a softer edge and presto, it seated all the way to the previous mark.
