The "million mile" quotes...

are even starting to show up on Auto Trader.

Doing my usual "lets see whats out there" in the way of SDLs I came across one at a usecar lot. Ad read something to the effect of...these engines will run for a million mles. Surprised this lamprey didn't boast it gets 35MPG too!

Shoot, I thought that was only 115s and 123s.

Ebay is a scammers paradise. I've looked at 20 or so Mercedes from Ebay and Cars.com, and it appears some of the cars have been Photoshopped to hide rust.

Some of the cars are blocked in the driveway by three other cars. The "owner" doesn't have the keys and we have to view the car in some random person's driveway. One guy told me to "Go home and bid on it, if you don't want it, I won't make you buy it."

I've looked at cars being sold in New Jersey, which were brought here from Maryland by two kids who drove the car to NJ. The engine was soaked in oil from the valve cover gasket, to the oil pan. The kids claimed "The big man" topped off the oil that day. Maryland has strict inspection tests, so I'm guessing it was sold in NJ to avoid the inspection process.

Another time, I looked at a 240D from Ebay. As I was watching the oil soaked engine struggle to hot start and barely idle, the "owner?" said "These things run forever." The car could not keep up with traffic. I could have out paced the car on my bike till' it got up to speed. The owner explained the oil soaked engine as being from someone running the car without an oil cap. He "found the cap under the seat, but bought a new one to put on the engine." He claimed the cap was in the trunk. All I found was 4 or 5 GALLONS of oil.

And why is it that the person presenting the car, never can do business with you on the spot, and always reccomends fowarding any offers to "Bob"?

I've been looking for something reasonably priced for over a year, and nothing has come my way. I would take a gem or a beater, if it was properly priced.

at least the people i got my car from gave me a logical reason i got passed by a garbage truck while driving it.. "bad turbo" which turned out to be clogged banjo bolts and an ALDA adjustment.. they didnt say a million miles or 30 mpg.. they told me everything they knew what they had done.. even asked if i was hungry for lunch.. they told me about the small rust spot and the broken glove box door striker and the roof paint and how their daughter had run a tire over on the highway and parked the car over a yellow parking lot thing and dented the oil pan.. how the vacuum system leaked and it wouldnt shut down and they had to have the car idle for 10 hours before it ran out of fuel.. and the rebuilt tranny not to long ago.. with recipts

you just have to be lucky i guess

OWNED!!!!

Many ways to shut a car off in 10 hours... You COULD even drain the oil and antifreeze out of it
I'm sorry, its been a LONG day... I think thats awesome

Its not really big, and the part you push with your finger is no bigger than a quarter. If all 190's are the same, it will be easier to find if you are looking from over the passenger side fender. It was pretty hard to find, so you may want to consult with the owners manual.

This thread just shows me yet again why the 240D will not be seeing ebay when it goes up and away.

Fired it up after sitting for a week in 30 degree weather....I was excited!

I don't trust anyone selling one of these cars anymore. 95% of the sellers are either lieing scum bags or don't know what they are talking about or have. It is the 5% that you want to buy a car from. They are hard to find.

Same for me. That 5% knows what they have, and wouldn't be stupid enough to sell it. Who sells a 300D or 240D is decent shape? I see them around town all the time but know they're not for sale. It seems very difficult to get the drivers attention.
