Transmission

What Transmissions will fit in my 81 300SD . My tranny is on her way out.
I have a friend with several MB trannys but I need to know what will work.
There is one from a 73 240D 5 cyl non turbo, one from a 86 420SEL V8 gas,
and a few more. Thanks. Jay

A 240 tranny probably won't hold up very long to the greatly increased stress (around 2x the hp) of a turbo 5cyl, and the gas engine tranny's are setup with a different valve body and shift points (much higher rpms), the best bet is to find a tranny from a 1981-84 SD, then it would drop right in and there'd be no problems. The 300D's have a mechanical spedometer, but if you converted that, you could use any of those transmissions too. The 1985 model year saw changes to the transmission, so I'm not sure if that one would be easily compatible, they're super rare anyways, so no point.

Have you tried all the adjustments and such for that unit before concluding it is infact going out?

Unhappy

It slips a lot in reverse, will move back a little on a flat. If I give it more then
a little bit of gas , it will just slip. Slips a little from 2nd-3rd and a lot from
3rd-4th. Thanks. Jay

Sounds like it could be a pump issue. Sounds silly I know, but have you verified it's full of ATF?

Are the transmission dimensions different that this swap would also call for drive shaft modification?
