Transmission identification
I decided to convert my 83 turbo diesel to manual transmission. In my search for a 240D 4 speed manual tanny I ended up with two. One from an 83 240D and another from what I think is a 78 or 79. The 83 is a one piece unit and bolts up to the engine with no problems. The older unit is a two piece box and has a different bolt pattern. Can anyone tell me what the older unit is and why it has a different pattern? It was my understanding any year of 240D would be compatible.

As far as I know, both trannys will work, but you will need the proper adapter plate that is sandwiched between the tranny and the engine. The two piece was used on the W115 and on W123 240D until late 1980 ( I think)

Right, both trannies will work and the bolt patterns should be the same. An "alignment" pin may need to be pulled, no problem, the bolts will align it fine. The only problem I found switching between these years is the reverse shifting rod, which may need shortening or lengthening, no problem either. Make sure you get the right throw out bearing or you pull the tranny again, dont ask how I know.
